Hello,

Can anyone help? I have an Acer Aspire Laptop which, when you boot up gives the following message:
Also says:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file

I can't boot up in Safe Mode at all

I have tried re-installing Windows, but get a little way through the process when the blue screen (aaaarrrgh!) displays the following message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f* to select Advanced Start Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:
STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x808855f0, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F)

I have managed to remove the hard drive and saved all important files....

HELP anyone!!

This is what Microsoft says about your error:

This behavior occurs because your computer processor detected and reported an unrecoverable hardware error to Windows XP. To do this, the processor used the Machine Check Exception (MCE) feature of Pentium processors or the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) feature of some Pentium Pro processors. The following factors may cause this error message:

* System bus errors
* Memory errors that may include parity or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems
* Cache errors in the processor or hardware
* Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLB) errors in the processor
* Other CPU-vendor specific detected hardware problems
* Vendor-specific detected hardware problems

I would first try removing one memory card (if you have two) to test the memory. A hardware error of this type can be deadly if it's in the motherboard. I hope it's still on warranty.

Hiya - thanks for your reply. It was booting up every so often a week or so ago, but wanting to do the file check - however a successful boot was intermittent. when you try to boot up you get this message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Not sure that this is helpful for you, but what the heck....
Please re-install a copy of the above file - it was also doing this before. I will look at the memory as you suggest and let you know how I get on.

Thanks

I just said to heck with it. And just went to bit torrent and downloaded a new version of Ubuntu 9.04 and installed that since I could not get the darn XP to work. I think microsoft and Acer needs to fix that problem and
require that all laptops and netbooks have partition on the drive like Drive C and Drive D for the recovery instead
of using a dirty flash drive to recover it. I tried to find ways to recover the XP Home operating system sadly, no luck. The missing hal.dll file was keeping the whole net book from operating the command functions. So that's when I had to do the last resort and install Ubuntu 9.04 to keep it going and at least get online. Just remember
when you don't know what to do just install Linux to take a long break away from Microsofts bug screen problems.
