Hello, about 3 weeks ago my daughter told me she had to hold the power button until the pc shut down. We haven't done any upgrades lately. When I try to shut down it does an auto restart. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my problem but my speakers aren't working. I checked my sound card & it doesn't see it. Also, for awhile when it boots up it does a chkdsk. It says it found an error in ne of the files.

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

Here is the link to Microsoft's web page on shutdown errors:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308029

When Windows does not shutdown it is usually because a service or user installed program is not responding when asked to terminate. The above link should provide some help to fix your problem.

I have had some success using CCleaner (it's a free download) to clean the registry when I had this problem. Select the registry clean feature after downloading and installing the program.

Good Luck
