Virus that hides your desktop?

Hello,
my computer appears to have acquired some sort of terrible virus, i believe,
in which the desktop has completely vanished.
neither the icons nor my taskbar are viewable.
in order to access anything, i have to use windows task manager.
what can i do? i REALLY need your help. thanks. :)

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

Hi,
go to the task manager, select new task, type explorer and then OK.
this should bring everything back to normal.

Do you what to do if a virus hides all the contents of your drive c and drive d? please help.. thanks!

When you put in the new task to run type Explorer.exe
