New Linksys Router problems!

ituserit, on Tuesday 27 May 2008 à 14:03:57
Hello,

I have been using the same Linksys Router for going on 5 years. I have recently been having alot of problems loosing connection so I decided it was time to get a new router.

I purchased a Linksys G wireless Router.

My home setup is like this.
Cable modem (Comcast)
>
Linksys Wireless G
>
Computer/PS2

I had alot of trouble setting this up. I did everything from cloning my MAC address to turning off the firewall. At one point I thought I had it all figured out and fixed but then the next morning I couldnt connect to the internet again. Its weird also. When this happens I cant connect to the Router to review settings either. When I was getting onto the internet, it would be very iffy on what sites would work and what wouldnt. Im so confused.

Please someone, help me out/Point me in the right direction/tell me what other actions I need to explore!

If I forgot any information, please ask. I will give you whatever you need.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

My guess would be a few things.
One is the MTU is off. Contact your isp for help in that reguard.

Might have a bad cable too. Thow them away and get new Good quality cables if there is any doubt. I see them all the time. They get bad at the ends, run over with chairs and such.

You should not have cloned the mac. Only people cheating have to do that. Are you cheating something?

Now, in fairness some ISP's won't allow either simple information out or simple changes.

Hopefully the setup ought to be something like this.

Cable modem setup by isp. Should have public ip at your side connector.

Connect the modem to the routers wan port.

Set up firewalling features in router. Consider port blocking. Disallow control from wan and other security.
Enable dhcp to lan in small range and say 1 day to forever lease time.

Set computer to dhcp. May have to add in isp dns ip as extra in network config.

Use router logs and computer's event logs to help with issues.
