Hi, all!

I recently buy a Dell Dimension 3000, with Windows XP Home Edition, and I'm experiencing very slow hard drive performance…

The drive is a Maxtor 80 GB, Ultra DMA 133, 7200 rpm. It runs slower than an ATA-33. I called Dell support, they had me run some utilities, but to them everything is fine, and they won't help me.

Here's what I have tried so far with no results:
- Checked the cable, it is an 80 conductor cable
- Changed the jumper setting on the drive from cable select, to master
- Installed the latest Intel chipset drivers
- Checked the settings in WIndows, it is running DMA-5
- Removed the IDE controller, re-boot, and let it re-install

Has anyone had a similar problem? I do lot of database work, so hard drive performances are very important to me. My last machine was a homebuilt, with an DMA-66 Maxtor, and it was 10 times faster than this…

I would really appreciate some help on this issue…

Thanks in advance

Hello to you too!!

As you have just bought it, i think that Dell could have brought a technician at your place to see what was really wrong, don't you think?

I am having the exact same issue on the exact computer. It's NOT viruses or Malware. It has something to do with the factory install, and the factory settings. I have two of the Dimension 3000's, and on one, I reinstalled Professional, and it works fine now. The other computer, I actually kept on using although it was SLOWER THAN you can possibly imagine. I did a Factory Restore, and it was then that I remembered how much JUNK Dell had on my computer when I first got it. First of all Norton is horrible. Period. When the computer booted up, it was working normally. As I started to uninstall some of the programs that were uneeded, it went right back to what is was doing before, and it DRAGGED like no other. I'm fixing to install a clean version of Professional on there, and if that doesn't work, it's going in the dumpster. I've been doing this for a decade, and computers take the cake when it comes to unexplainable bullsh*t.
