Firewire not being read by 'my book' drive

Hello,
i have just brought this new 'my book' studio edtion for my mac pro, but i can not get it to work on the firewore 800 ports? it only works on the usb, i think i may of formatted it for usb? is that right, i thought u could just use it for all ports, that why i got it? Anyway, what can i do as i really want to just use the firwire for film and keep the usb free. Do i have to format to firewire, if how? please help....
