Look in System Information. (Start - Run - type: msinfo32 , OK) On the left look at Hardware Resources - IRQs. If any device is sharing an IRQ with a USB controller related device, other than other USB controller related devices, you can have strange problems when certain more sophisticated USB connected devices are connected, even if you were not having problems with USB devices previously. E.g. if a device on card in a slot is doing that, try moving it to another slot. Don't use the PCI slot on the end nearer the middle of the mboard for anything except a PCI video card - that slot is forced to share it's IRQ with the video and that often causes problems. If you did have that problem and cured it, you also need to re-load the Windows USB stack. Uninstall everything in Device Manager for your USB controllers. Unplug all USB devices. If you still have a PS/2 or serial mouse connected, Shut Down the computer. If that leaves you without a mouse but you still have a keyboard, hold down Alt and Ctrl, press Del, let go of those keys; hold down Alt, press U, let go of those keys; press U - the computer will Shut Down. If you have neither mouse nor keyboard, hold the power button in for at least 4 seconds until the computer shuts off, then let go. Plug in at least your USB mouse and/or USB keyboard if applicable. Boot the computer. If you held the power button in to shut off the computer CHKDSK will want to run - let it - don't press any keys when you see it's blue screeen. Windows will re-load the USB stack auomatically while booting. Try all your USB devices. |
