Slow file access over VPN

Hello,


We recently set up n VPN for our network. Connectivity is perfectly fine. However, we do have issues with regards to 2 Excel files. They are 10MB and 6.5MB in size respectively.

The 10MB file takes about 5 minutes or more to open. And the other one abou half that time.

Does anyone know why this could be ti slow?

Please bear in kind that both these files do have quite a few PivotTables in them. However, I still think that is a bit long.

Any ideas?

What is both sides speed?

Are you using terminal services to open the program to access the file?

Can I assume that you are trying to open a file that may be large but to open it one needs access to many more supporting files?

Not knowing the type of VPN you're using, it's a hard question to answer. Assuming your link is a T1 both ways, you might want to look at using link compression if that option is available with your VPN setup. I use OpenVPN alot, and the LZO compression works great when working with Office documents.
