HP Pavilion a1520n

Hello,

A friend brought this PC to me. Upon boot this screen appears.

Award BootBlock BIOS v1.0
Copyright (c) 2000, Award Software, Inc.

BIOS ROM checksum error

Detecting IDE ATAPI device ...
Found CDROM, try to boot from it ...Fail

Detecting floppy drive A media...
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

The first thing I tried was taking the CMOS battery out for awhile. Put it back in and still the same. Then I reset the CMOS using the jumper settings. Still nothing. So I did some research on the error and it pretty much boils down to flashing the bios. I decided to chat with an HP technician online and he told me that I have to take it to a service center which is impossible in my remote area. Is there a work around? I've never flashed a bios but I'm not afraid to try. Where would I get the .bin file for the mobo which is Asus A8N-LA Socket: 939 and detailed information on how to do the flash? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

Any bios upgrades would be on the HP support page for that model but it probably doesn't need to be flashed. The battery may just be dead. Replace it, or at least check its voltage with a DC meter.

Then boot up and enter cmos/bios setup. Set date, time, etc. Make sure both IDE controllers are enabled. Make sure the hard drive is properly identified--usually as AUTO.

It's not finding a hard drive in the boot sequence. So either it's not identifed properly, its controller isn't enabled, it's not in the boot sequence or the drive isn't there or isn't connected. Of course you can open the case to verify if it's there and connected.

I got the same problem with my computer, I used the official update of HP for a8n-la motherboard, but during the update installation (i'm not sure if it was suppose to) the ocmputer restarted himself and the same message appeared:

I checked in the HP tech support center, tried clear CMOS, removed batteries, windows and linux CD, but nothing is working. I'll change the batteries tomorow, but if it doesn't work is going to the tech support is the only option? I cant find information about flashing my BIOS for my A8N-LA, and I dont have a floppy disk drive

I have the same problem. Once I start up my computer it goes straight to: Bios Rom Checksum error Detecting IDE ATAPI. Did you find a solution for this?

I installed a BIOS update for my wifes Compaq SR1750NX (ASUS A8AE-LE Board, Athlon 64 3500+ Socket 939 Processor) right off of the HP.com website and received the exact same error message. Computer never booted up again after updating the BIOS. I also tried everything, including making a Windows XP SP2 Boot Disk. The computer did read the boot disk, but still failed to boot up. I also can't use the recovery module to solve the problem. HP Tech stated that I should get into the BIOS configuration module and select the default mode. Well, I can't do that if the computer will not boot up.
So anyway, I went and purchased a BIOS chip from the e-bay seller noted in parenthesis (biosdepot). He has a good rep, and swapping out the chip will probably solve the problem. Unfortunately, the chip needs to be soldered onto the motherboard, and I really don't want to put a soldering iron to a good board if I can avoid it. So what I've ended up doing is purchasing a replacement motherboard, an ASUS A8N-LA. While I'm at it, I'll also upgrade the processor to an Athlon 64 3700+ and add more memory.
So, to make a long story short, I'm afraid that you're SOL (like I am). If you don't mind soldering on your motherboard, send a message to the e-bay BIOS chip seller that I identified (biosdepot). He can probably fix you right up. Otherwise, you might have to purchase a new or used motherboard replacement.
Best of luck,
Paulino
