My start menu, icons was gone...

Hello,

when i was finished updating my window, and change the mouse of my computer, and restart it,,as i logged in,, the start menu and icons was gone,,and there is this userinit.exe unable to initialize properly.. i can access my programs through task manager,,

please help...i dont want to reformat my computer and start all over again...

What OS you having ? If XP you try to repair the windows, without reinstall.

ater finishing scanning my computer and restart and when it opens there is no no start menu icon on the computer ...please can you help me find out a way to bring back the start menu icons...

Same thing, no icons, no start,and accesing through task manager and new task. I do have internet, didn't have that before. Have been through 4 techs at HP the last one sent me to www.kellys-korner.com I did what the tech told me to do, and it says the same thing on that site, but there is something else about trauma.....I'm not sure what to do about that.It might be something that can help but I don't know enough to attempt it. I feel like I'm in techo-computer-hell.
