Mp3 files got converted to jpg

Hello,

Last time i surfed on internet and some kind virus/malware has converted all my mp3 files to jpg files.
Please help to remove this virus and to convert all my song files back to normal. And also suggest which kind of sites contain these serious kind of virsuses and malwares.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 2.0.0.20

It's easy to convert them back to mp3, you just have to right click on the files and change the extension and put it back to .mp3

Basically its the malware that has created a folder in c:/windows/system32 called mcont i.e media control and it is also there in startup.
delete the mcont folder and uncheck media control from the start up(run->msconfig). this helped me resolve my issue.
Now download FECSetup3.3.zip, from net it is file extn changer. then you convert the file type of one file at a time or full folder at one go. I found this software very useful. All my Mp3 and avi files also changed to jpg files. Try, Good luck.

Hello aakash i deleted that mcon folder but im not able to find media control in the msconfig when i run that can u tell me where to find it

Hii robz!

follow these steps:

go to start-> click on run-> type msconfig then enter-> system configuration utility window will open-> click on the right most tab (startup). here u'll find the list of startup items which start automatically when ur operating system starts! find media control-> uncheck it-> click ok. then restart ur system.

thats it.

Sir,

I gone through all your suggestions, that mp3 files have converted into jpg.
but i tried eveything but in my system there was no mcont files or medial control in
startup

please give me good solutions for this as i am having 10000 mp3 songs

Sir, you sat that jpg file convert to mp3 easily you say that right click on the which songs convert jpg and go to open with adn choice media player and always open click but sor i try that no result found pls tell me what type of problems kindly you any suggestion to me this problems.

Try doing this..
1. Delete this folder first (C:/Windown/system32/mcont).
2. Download FEC setup 3.3 (Google for and u can get it)
3. Install and convert all .jpg extention to .mp3 extention

Hope this will work for u..

Even I was being infected with the same virus from my friend's computer pen drive. All my mp3, avi, movies and multimedia got converted into jpg. But the file extensions were just renamed, and the formats were still the same. When I checked all over the internet finally I got to know it is some mediacontrol virus and also I got the solution to kill the virus.

You just need to delete the mcont folder in c drive and remove mediacontrol from starting up with msconfig. I hope the solution [linked above] can explain you clearly.

Hii..shamit!

i think u hav not properly downloaded that file itself.... or ur file might have got corrupted.
please do that again.... n ya u have to select a song or a movie to change its extension ....or u can also selct the whole folder....which contains media files.

Hi aakash.....you need not download any software......just run 'cmd' and choose the directory where the files have been converted to jpeg n use the command 'ren <filename.jpg> <filename.mp3>,..........convert similarly all files to mp3 n enjoy!!!!

Notes : Those who could not find :mediacontrol.exe: in process tab of Task manager, just remember malware sometimes creates this file with new name. In my case it was copy.exe

U can find this file name in the mcont folder.

To convert the files back to mp3, I used :
antrenamer tool
