Outlook 2007 deletes inbox emails

softnetlog, on Thursday 22 May 2008 à 12:41:17
Hello,

I have Outlook 2007 configured with 2 email accounts (one POP and one IMAP). I have no problems with either account except for this one.

Outlook randomly deletes emails from my POP account's Inbox. Occasionally, if I catch it in time, I'll see the emails in my Deleted Items folder before it's emptied. Unfortunately, I usually find out when the emails are missing from my inbox. I don't know how often this happens.

Strangely, there is ONE email that will never be deleted (it was the first email I ever received on the account). The rest will be deleted randomly if I don't carefully check the deleted items folder and move them back to the inbox.

There is ABSOLUTELY no reason for this. I rarely access this inbox, have no rules set up that would do this, and no one else is accessing the computer.

This must be an Outlook 2007 issue, right? I've never seen anything like this before...
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

Are you positive the emails are going into your Deleted Items? How often do you empty your deleted items? What is the "Current View" of your Inbox?

I'd try setting a rule to move all new email sent to the POP account to a separate folder and see what happens

Same problem here, with a single account. When i do a send/recieve, the status message shows recieving 3 of 17, 4 of 17, etc. But when the send/receive finishes, there are no messages, and they're no longer on my pop server either. They just disappear!

Problem solved. In my case, the emails were being swept into a Spam folder by McAfee. The Spam folder was subordinate to the Outlook Inbox folder. Unlike other subordinates, this folder does not cause the parent folder to auto-expand when there are new items, so I didn't think to look there.

Hi,

I agree with the issue being related with either SPAM or McAfee. Can you specify how you actually fixed it please?

I have the same issue using windows XP, Outlook2003 and IMAP. This would rule out issues because of Vista, Office 2007 and POP I guess!

Very frustrating!

Max.

Similar issue. When reading through my email inbox Outlook goes to the next email and quickly deletes it. Seems to be on automatic. Also, these do not go to the deleted folder. They just dissappear!
No clues as to why this happens. No problem when using the hotmail online email application.

Did you ever solve the problem with Outlook deleting your POP inbox messages? It seems that no one on the thread resolved the issue.

If you found out what to change/configure, I'd totally appreciate a response. I'm far from a computer techie, so if you do have instructions, can you please make them simple.

Again, thanks so much!

Hi Nicole, the only consolation I can give @ the moment is you are not unique in this. I have been trying to sort this out with my Perth Australia ISP with no success. I will try again and let you know if I have success.

The other issue I have is when I travel I change my outgoing mail server to a relay service Authsmtp.com previously no problems (prior to Outlook 2007) now it keeps asking for the password even though it is set in the system. The dialog box keeps coming back and the emails don't send.

Had a similar thing I just fixed - it turned out the POP server I was using I had put a character in my password that screwed up the POP account log in from Outlook, I cahnged the password in my POP account and taht fixed things.

Also I get mails that are autodeleted if they are between various accounts that belong to me it probably triggers a spam trip!

check that the following menu setting is checked on your Outlook:
- 'View - Arrange By - Current View - Messages'
If the setting is '- View - Arrange By - Current View - Unread Messages in this Folder', it will seem as if Outlook removes the messages that have been read until you select 'Messages' Again.

We have just had the same problem across clients on our network where today Outlook deleted some three or mails as they were opened from a number of users. We have Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003 with GFI and F-Prot AV. I seem to recall seeing this problem some years ago but cannot remember the fix

I have the same problem since one week. ALL incoming messages first come in the Inbox and then are immediately transferred to the Deleted Items folder. Strange enough they appear there in two-fold.
I have Windows XP, SP3, Outlook 2003 (11.8206.8202) SP3
I looked into the Rules, but nothing syspicious there.

Any chance that this is some virus? If so, does anyone know a cure?

Hans - any update to your problem? I've got the same thing happening to one person at one of my clients.
But it (of course) never happens when I'm there. Outlook 2003, Exchange 2003, XP SP2, AVG antivirus.

Having swept the mail server and all other servers and offending user systems for virus and spyware using both F-Prot and AVG nothing came up of any note.
We are having problems with Exchange with various warnings coming up and the server seems to need a reboot every week or so to stop these occuring.
When we moved to Exchange and Outlook we dumped GBs of mail into the server via individual port from out last mail client Thunderbird. We have now archived all this old mail out of Exchange into archive files on the main server. I now suspect that we have either a faulty Exchange install or faulty HD's on the server or the GBs of mail transfer corrupted the Exchange database.
The fault that went away last week has now returned today with some mails vanishing I also noiticed that Exchange was showing errors all over the place and looks as if it crashed last night and then restarted.

First of all this is not directly aimed at anyone.

Hi It is also easy to blame a virus all of the time this is an amatuers way of looking at things. My suggestion is if you have SP3 on i would un-install it as this SP seems to cause a few problems with certain applications for instance- If you had SP3 already install I Found that MSO 2007 would not install and would keep bringing up an error on install.

I use MSOO And have no bother with it i run XP PRO SP2 And custom install update so i Know what I'm getting.

My view is that SP3 has more bugs than it does updates and hotfixes which in turn may pursuade you to upgrade to Vista which is Also a Beta version and is full of bugs Obviously MS are trying to corner the market I think we should all swap to Leopard 10.5 and that would F**k Bill Gates.

If I find any Fixes for this Problem I will post here.

But thats only my opinion. I am not meaning to offend anyone either.

"amatuers way of looking at things..." "...pursuade you to upgrade to Vista"

Yeah, I can tell you're not an amateur. Now if only Leopard had any kind of non-Microsoft enterprise software! P.S. Entourage is much buggier than Outlook.

Found the problem it was F-Prot for Exchange. When I removed F-Prot it all went back to working though I had to recover the vanished mails. It maybe it did not like the GFI Anti Spam or Server SP2 but whatever I will not be using it again.

I just joined Facebook and all responses from there go directly to my deleted directory.
Ny ISP is Sympatico, I use Firefox, I have added @facebook to my safe senders list, and facebook does not appear in my blocked senders list.

My reading also is that it is bizarre.

My problems were caused by a strange rule that somehow was set in the Outlook - tools - rules and alerts.
Mine in particular was had no address associated to it and had all incoming e-mail deleted.
Hope this helps.

Please, in plain English, can anyone answer the questions regarding how to fix Outlook from deleting emails from POP server?

I (as many of the others in this thread) have all of my messages on my SBC Yahoo account deleted (and not found in the trash or spam--completely wiped) whenever I use Outlook.

So, if anyone out there has a simple response on how to configure this on Outllook, please respond. I am not a computer tech, so as simple as possible (i.e., click here, click there) would be wonderfully appreciated.

In advance, thank you so very much!

Hi

Sounds like it may be the same issue we had with a rubbish anti-virus application F-Prot for Exchange. Check your anti-virus or maybe remove it and install another as a test such as AVG.

I have the same problem whether McAfee anti virus is enabled or disabled. I suspect that there are huge numbers of people with the same problem with Outlook 2007 only they don't realise it because if they don't get the email they never know that it was sent to them. The randomness on intermitten nature of it is especially frustrating. My ISP has disowned responsibility since the messages download from their POP server.
One clue - it helps at all - is if I repair each of the email addresses (I have two) - then that can fix it...temporarily...

It would be one of those situations I suspect...where so many would be so thankful to so few (or even just one)..who came up with the simple, clear answer

Hi Mish, I go to Tools and then Account Settings and then click on the Repair icon (I tick the manual settings box) then go through the process...it doesn't solve the problem for very long though..

I KNOW THE ANSWER

If you do not delete your emails on your inbox enough, it will delete them on it's own. Always remember to delete emails after you read them. I have had this problem in the past, so it should be relatively easy to solve.

Hi Tom, I'd be very surprised if this is the case. I keep Outlook down to manageable size and do delete emails...but I'll try anything...I'll move the inbox emails to other folders if necessary to keep them.

Mor likely I suspect it is a flaw with Outlook 2007 which Microsoft need to patch.

Well, I appreciate everyone's response. I have the same problem of deleting emails. I have two accounts also. I have tried everything mentioned on this message board with no avail. I have deleted emails, checked my spam folder, removed my virus protection program, and changed from using Outlook to Windows mail. I have scoured the Internet and still haven't found a solution. I am thinking about replacing my Windows Vista with XP.

Please let me know if you find something.

Sincerely, Geo

I had exactly this issue with Outlook 2007. I tried everything including uninstalling and re installing Office, repairing the pst file, full diagnostics. Nothing worked.

Finally in desperation I uninstalled my Sophos antivirus and firewall and reinstalled. That did the trick. So in my case at least it was something to do with my antivirus but I don't know if this is an Office problem or Antivirus issue.

I was having this same problem - thought I was going crazy. I'd reply to a message and then it would be deleted......or I'd go back looking for a message and it was "randomly" gone, or so I thought. Finally realized I had the view/current view/hide read messages ticked by accident somehow, instead of view/current view/show all messages. Changed it to "show all" and no more disappearing emails.
