Connect pc & laptop [xp]

Zennon4, on Wednesday 21 May 2008 à 15:17:42
Hello,

Recently i got a new laptop, installed with xp. I already have a pc and i want to connect these two over LAN. Both have Lan cards installed. I also have my Crossover cable [rj-45] ready. I tried plugging both ends of Rj-45 cable to pc and laptop. My problem is, i am unable to configure them for to be used over LAN, (i.e) sharing files, internet connection and ocassional LAN games. Can anybody give me step by step instruction on configuring them for LAN access? Will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

I would use a router to connect both computers and to the internet, that way one does not have to be on for the other to connect to the internet.

Dear if you want to connect u r laptop with u r pc. first of all u need straight cable for conneting u r laptop to u r pc.
now u r laptop and u r pc are in workgroup or in sharing mode. u just give same range of ip like 10.100.11.1 to 10.100.11.2 with same subnet mask. so that they communicate. and u r in ready mode to share and whatever you want .

Additional Information required:

1. Do you have a router? I’m assuming that you do not but I need a yes or no to this question.

2. Do you have a second Ethernet card in your PC or at least 1 wireless and one PCI-Ethernet card.
a. You will need atleast 2 cards in one of these 2 options to be able to connect to the internet and connect through LAN simultaneously.

3. There is a way to connect and configure your laptop and your desktop PC via an Ethernet cable with just one Ethernet port or card in each computer but this will not allow sharing of the Internet if a second communications device is not added or built in to the desktop PC. The desktop PC should be your main Internet connection if you do not have a router.

4. Reply to these questions and I'll get back to you with your configuration.

Hi,
If you have Ethernet adapter both in PC and Laptop it will possible.

Just go to the TCP ip settings of the laptop and give the
ip address: 10.1.1.1
Subnetmask:255.255.255.-
Default gateway: 10.1.1.2

Just go the TCP Ip settings of the PC and give the
IP address: 10.1.1.2
Subnet mask:255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 10.1.1.1

Just connect both lan using the system RJ45 connector and ping 10.1.1.2 from your laptop . If you get the reply both the systems are connected.
