Icons won't load on start up

Hi hope u can help I'm got a Toshiba laptop it's runs xp every time I load it up I get the taskbar but only one icon I put it in safemode and do a norton scan it's came up with 5 which I got rid of it reset it was fine and then I reset again and it went the same again I've tryed the notepad on safemode prompt and gone to the hkey _local_machine/software/Microsoft /windows nt/current version /image file executions and delete this one I think it might be a virus ? As I look up one problem I found and it was a virus will I need to format my laptop thanks for your time and your help Lisa x

Hello Lisa,

Please stop deleting things as you may ruin XP.

If there is a virus, will find it later.

For the time being, try this:

Please follow these steps to get your icons back:

reboot your computer in the Safe mode with command prompt.

Once Windows loaded, command prompt (black window) opens. Type notepad and press Enter.

A notepad window opens. Type the following text into notepad:

[Version]
Signature="$Chicago$"
Provider=Myantispyware.com

[DefaultInstall]
AddReg=regsec

[regsec]
HKCU, Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System,DisableRegistryTools,0x00000020,0
HKLM, Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon,Shell,0x00000020,"Explorer.exe"

Save this as fix.inf to your Desktop (remember to select Save as file type: All files in Notepad). Close Notepad.

In the command prompt type Explorer.exe and Press Enter. Windows Explorer opens. Locate the fix.inf, click right button and select Install. Close Windows Explorer.

In the command prompt type shutdown -r and press Enter. Your computer will be rebooted.

Hi I tried it nothing happened I have got the norton icons on the taskbar every time I go to the start up button I just get the hourglass thanks again for your help and support

lisa make sure norton is working on kioskea web page find is my antivirus working run a virus string and if not uninstall it and reinstall. i have norton let me know...

Hi norton is on it had the green tick on it I'm doing a scan on safe mode I have anvi smart defender too could that be a problem thanks again

This is a good scanner download EmsisoftEmergencyKit. Go to update and update it go to options under quarantine ck ok it will take a about 45mins i will be here ok uninstall anvismart defender norton is all you need... let me know...(:

in firefox type in emsisoftemergencykit... and down load it..

My laptop has a network card so it's saying server not found grrrrr sorry

It won't let me do anythink and on safemode I can only do a full scan

you can only do safe mode can you open a browser like google... can you download norton power eraser..

norton power eraser is good go to there web site. if not it should be on your norton under scans... it ok dont worry..

what kind pc is it or.... in windows start button type recover manger.. if you have a disk it should tell you how.. what kind of toshiba is it
