Hello,

I have a relatively new Gateway laptop MT3422, purchased 1.5 years ago. When I try to turn the computer on the LED lights work and the fan makes noise, but the screen will not boot. I took out the battery and plugged in my computer to the power supply, and the computer worked just fine.

I do not know anything about computers, but I am assuming that this is a problem with the battery. Can this battery be fixed, would purchasing a new battery fix this problem, or should I seek a computer repair shop?

Thank you!

Configuration: Windows Vista

Hi,
try changing the battery and see if the problem persists.
if it does, then it must be your graphics card which is faulty.
try another one to see if it works.

I've had the same problem, except it wouldn't boot on battery or when plugged in. I called Answers by Gateway, and was told to press and hold f1 f2 f3 f4 and enter then press the power button. After a couple of tries it worked. I have no idea why but it did. It seems to only fail on me when I restart (twice it has restarted for updates, and twice it didnt turn back on unless I press and hold f1 f2 f3 f4 and enter while powering it.
Any ideas on a permanent fix?
Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem with the same laptop. Tried to start the computer. LED light comes on, but screen remains blank. Took it to a local computer shop for repairs, supposed to hear something tomorrow. Will update.

What did you hear, Neil?

i have a friend's gateway which shows power on, but the display is blank. after pressing power button, disk lights three times, then no activity at all. you can hear the drive power up a couple of clicks and then nothing. i can read the drive on another PC and there were no infections.

i've even tried connecting an external monitor, witch states no power from the confuser.

a very perplexing problem.

How did the Computer guy fix your Gateway Laptop. My laptop just did that to. My screen froze, I had to turn it off, and when I tried to turn it back on all I got was the blue lights and fan working but a black screen

Hey, there i had the same problem , after extensive time messing with my laptop i came to find out that one of my ram slots was fried. I took a 2g ram from my girlfriends computer and tried this method as i only had a pair if 512s on my vista, one of them was gone. This goes for the black screen (pc laptop on power to drive and dvd/cd rom)and hard drive kicking in.
The next thing though to try was the internal battery in which on some ocasions prevents your laptop from booting (it has something to do with the clock).
Hope this helps i know the feeling.

I'm having a similar issue, my laptop a gateway m6850FX just keeps resetting after 3 seconds of being turned on. I have cleaned out the dust from inside the case checked ram, ram sockets, the HDD. I've tried rebooting with different ram, different HDD, booting with just the ram and cpu. rebooting after a power drain "removing the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds", removing the cmos battery for a minute and still no luck. Sometimes It stays on up to 15 seconds sometimes it just shuts off after 3 like I said. This all started after my original HDD died. After purchasing a new one it started doing this. I also had a friend with the same model laptop try out my cpu to verify that it wasn't that and it worked fine. I contacted Gateways awesome tech support..... After explaining to him everything I tried he told me that my notebook was out of warranty and it would cost me $199 plus shipping with no guarantee that they could fix it, without offering any suggestions what he may think it could be. So now before I treat this laptop like the photocopier from Office space I just want to make sure there's nothing else I could possibly try that maybe I overlooked any help would be appreciated.
