Operating System Not Found

Hello,
On my older Gateway Solo 2500 the message Operating System Not Found appears on startup. the notebook worked fine one day and the next this message. can it be saved or can I connect the HD to my desktop to retrieve the data and programs that I have on the notebooks HD?

Configuration: Windows 98 NT 5.0

Hello,

If you want to, we can check your laptop is or isn't still "dead" and make a back-up of your files.

If you want to try, you need 15 minutes, a CDR and a cd writer.
Is your laptop able to boot on cd?
Do you know how to acces to bios and change the boot order?

Do you have a Cd of your OS ?(XP, I suppose)
