Hello,
I have a WD 1TB external hard drive (MY PASSPORT) , supposed new without documentation. The light comes on and there are soft noises from within, but when I connect to my PC,the hard disk is detected but I am not able to copy data from the hard disk. My PC runs on on windows7. How can I copy data from the hard disk.

Please help me on this.

Thanks,
Arun

Hi Arun,

What do you mean by saying it is new, but without documentation? How would you describe those noises, like noise from spinning or clicking noise? It is normal that the drive spins on connecting, but if it is like "click-click-click" it may be having some mechanical issues. Do you get some message or an error, explaining why you can not copy files? I recommend you to try with another USB cable or on another PC.

Hope this helps

sir,

The noise is like "click-click-click" ( noise due to spinning) and I lost about 5gb of free space also. I bought the hard disk last year only. When I connect it to another system running on windows 8, the hard disk is detected and when I tried to copy data, the system got hanged and went to a non -responding state.

please help me
Arun

Unfortunately, the noise "click-click-click" indicates some mechanical issue with the drive. It is a really good sign that the drive is recognized and seems accessible, but sadly this issue prevents it from spinning correctly and reading the information. It should be confirmed by a technician which part in particular is making the noise, but surely this should be done under special conditions. I recommend you to contact the reseller and get a drive replacement. I leave you a link, where you can check your warranty status.

Sir

The warranty is there up to 23 November 2015. Is there any possible way to recover my data.

Arun

Well, it is hard to tell if it will be possible, but you may need to contact a Data Recovery Company, because the drive seems to have problems to function normally. Before that, I would try running a Linux Live CD, which may give you enough access to copy your files.
If you plan to use a Recovery Company, you should not try using any recovery software, because if it results unsuccessful, this may make the recovery company's job much harder.
I hope you will manage to save all your data.

I leave you a tracker for WD's Data Recovery Partners: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=zmc4vR
