hey there... last night my nephew dropped my laptop(Acer Aspire S3-951) off the table and banged on it for reasons I don't know... then after that I couldn't copy most of my files from the D:\ drive and I kept getting a 0x8007045D error... soo I connected the hdd to my desktop using the same sata connectors that was on my 3.5" desktop HDD... but it couldn't read the files.. since after that the HDD is intermittently detected on both my laptop and desktop....

however, I tried to install windows but it detects my mSATA SSD but not my main drive, then I tried installing ubuntu and I get an I/O error soo I had to install it on the 20.0GB SSD... again at times the hdd is there in the BIOS but not in the OS.. I mean when I run cfdisk from ubuntu and list disk on windows I see only the ssd but when I go to the BIOS I see the HDD... hope I was able to make myself clear.. thanks!

ohh yeah... I forgot to ask the question..... hahahahahah.. sorry for that.... well the question is is my hard drive dead or it's something else... and does anyone know how to get all my files back.. thanks!

Hi there,

I could not understand if the drive is now detected by both PC and laptop but files can not be seen, or still can not be detected. By any means, dropping a laptop could cause some damage, but without professional examination is really hard to tell what is going on. If there are no strange noises from the drive, it may be just the SATA port which was damaged, but that is just an assumption.
My advice: ask assistance from a technician.

the drive can neither be detected by the laptop nor the desktop. note that i'm connecting the HDD to the desktop via the sata and power cables that is used with my desktop HDD... it is intermittently detected by the BIOS on both machines, but not by the OS... and I don't get the sound of the head moving over the platter.. all I get is the sound of the spinning platter

Could you hear the head moving before dropping the laptop? If so, this may be a good indication that there may be some issue, preventing the actuator's functionality.

i think I just made up my mind to get a new hard drive... could anyone suggest me which brand should I buy... please don't recommend me SSDs...

thanks!

P.S. the drive has to be a better shock absorber than the seagate hdd that came with my laptop... anyways I was thinking of getting a hitachi hdd.. any other second options I should consider..?

Well, it is hard to recommend a shock resistant drive. No manufacturer could guarantee that a drive can resist physical hits. Hard drives are very fragile components and have to be managed with caution. If you need a reliable drive, I would recommend you the WD Blue drive, which is a very good drive for everyday usage. If you are into gaming, think about WD Black, which is a high performance drive.
