Disc Drive Problems..

softnetlog, on Monday 19 May 2008 à 13:12:47
Hello,

Okay..this just seems to be getting worse, basically the problem is my disc drive wont load certain discs, I put the disc in, you hear it spin, then stop, the spin, then stop..it carrys on like this for about 5minutes, not allowing you to eject the drive until it has stopped, and doesn't pick up the disc, thats the problem, any ideas whats up?

In the past I have got discs to work by breathing on them and putting them in with condensation on..it sometimes then picks the disc up..

Disc drive is - ATAPI DVD A DH16A1p ATA Device (Thats under properties..)
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

I sounds like your OPTICAL disk drive lense is dirty or the laser is failing. You can buy a lense cleaning kit and try that out or you can replace the drive. If the drive is more than a couple of years old you may want to consider replacing it.

i live in the Bahamas i dont think that gateway will send a drive to the bahamas. Maybe you may know of a site where i can download the drivers for it. also my broadcon wireless is on the blink. i cant find it in device manager however i found in under the harddrive and i manually reinstalled it and that didnt work so i went to recovery manager/ advanced and reinstalled the drivers, restarted the computer but when i rebooted it came on. after i was finshed i shut down the computer and guess what the drivers was missing again.

did you setup yourself? i think your data cable is not tight enought, open case and check it, it might work. before that, check on your BIOS by pressing F2 or Del when start computer, go there and see if there you can see DVD drive, if not then computer doesn't detect your DVD.

Wow, you too. I thought I was the only one. Also if I put something into the usb port the removable disc E icon shows up but for the device I put in. If anyone figures out how to get their disc drive to work again. Pls let me know how.

i found the solution and i fixed my dvd-r cd-r player. it is now workinging properly. heres how i fixed it. i took out the screws holding the dvd player and i removed it completely from the laptop. i then replaced it and tightened the screws. when i turned the computer back on it recognised it immediately and i havent had a problem since.

I had similar problmes in Vista. The solution for me was in the BIOS. I think I had a secondary device set up as CD/DVD and what it should be set up as is "none"

I have two drives, and, neither one of them pick up the disk, also, when i got into My Computer, the game icon doesn't show up, actually, neither one of my disk drives icons show up, they're both plugged in properly, seeing how they both open and close, but they just don't work. My Windows XP Ultimate Edition OS Disk works fin, but, no other disk does, I also play Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, both of them work.

Anyone know might be the problem?

Hello,
check the jumper on the back of the cd/rom before you discard it . It should be set to Master before you discrd it. The jumper is a tiny clip that connects pins together. It is easy to pull this off and move it over to MA- master. Cable select can go out and seen like the cd/rom or even hard drive has died, when it actually has another rout of transportation for data. Cable select can burn out kind of like a fuse burning out. Master is another way for data to travel. just open the computer and look. This will cause alot of Hard drive errors such as can't boot into the Operating system or can't get my cd to play. It can even be intermitten errors not just total failure. Every one also needs to remember to Defrag and SCANDISK-Error checking for the hard drive. this will prolong the life. Disk drive life expectancy is also short. Keep tis in mind.

Hello Dusty
I am having this same problem with my dvd/cd drive, i put a disc in, it starts spinning and making a bit of noise for about 10 seconds and then just stops and does nothing. Before this started happening, when i put a disc into the laptop it started up itself and the windows media player would come on the screen itself and the disc would start playing by itself. When i click on rip, all it says on the screen is 'a cd drive is needed to run a cd' so its like the drive is not being recognised anymore.
You say on your reply to someone elses question to open the computer up and have a look, do you mean take the back off and search around..?
Your input into this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks bluekipper.

My computer is operating from Windows Vista Home Edition, 32 bits.

I would like to install previous owned WordPerfect Office 11 and all I hear is hard drive spinning for about 5 minutes then it stops without installing software.

Is this a ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L problem?

Any suggestions on how I can correct this.

Tks so much,

Comi

I have a pioneer burner/player on my laptop. When I put a dvd or a cd in, the light goes on and you can hear the disc spinning. Then the light goes off and the spinning stops. Nothing else happens. I can go into my E drive and play it manually but it is such a pain to keep doing that. At one time a drop down would come on and it would ask what you want it opend in, like window media player, etc. but now nothing happens. Is there something that is shut off or needs ot be reprogrammed or what? Can you please help me, I am at a loss here!!!

CD/DVD drive not appearing in Device manager is misconfiguration in the BIOS. Open up your BIOS hitting the F2, Delete key or whatever key you manufacture tells you just before Windows boots. See if the device is listed in the BIOS. If the information about the drive has been entered in manually, try changing the detection to "Automatic."

* Another reason for failure of a device to show up in Device Manager, is the BIOS is not up to date. Go to your manufacturer's site, and update the BIOS. This can be a tricky procedure so you might want to exhaust other possibilities first.

* Another reason for failure to show up in device manager, is a virus. Do a virus scan or better yet, do one online for free at any of the major companies. By doing it online you will most likely bypass any hiding the virus is doing from you anti-virus program. If neither of these work for U let me know...........Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

What if you do not see a yellow traingle after expanding the dvd/cd driver? It sound like this must be some type of defect in this type of dvd/cd drive. I also have a Windows Vista (Business), and it is not very old. And it is also a Laptop and has a Opiarc DVD RW AD-7530B ATA Device. You can right-click and up-date device, But Window will come back and tell you that you have the most up-dated device that can be found online.

If U don't C a yellow triangle then I'm assuming it's the drive itself that's defected. Try unplugging the device from the computer, then plug it back in. Turn off ur computer before U do ofcourse. C if this helps.

1.Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

This can be done by opening the start menu and left clicking RUN, another option is pressing the windows logo key on the keyboard

together with the R key, in the box you type regedit and click OK ( or enter on your keyboard )
2. Find the right key in the registry.

Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Class > {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

When you see the UpperFilters key left click it and press delete, you will be asked for a confirmation, just click YES

Now do the exact same but with the Lowerfilters.
3. Reboot the computer

Now restart your computer and you should have a working CD/DVD drive once more !

CONCLUSION:

Some CD/DVD writing software change the filters in the registry to there own, this can sometimes cause problems.

By deleting these value's windows puts them back on default after a reboot.
