2 out of 3 computers in my home, using the same Qwest DSL, cannot download files from the internet bigger than 5MB. These 2 computers, Dell Dimension8200 XP, and Compaq Presario C700 Laptop Vista Home Premium, we both rebooted with reinstallation CD's back to factory settings. I was able to download Windows updates (after numerous attempts). But when I try to download freeware off of the internet using IE7 on both, it freezes within the first couple of minutes, then about 10 minutes later a window pops up informing me that either the connection was lost or could not be found, or that the it timed out. I have gone into internet settings, deleted the history, reset the settings to default, and even went into the registry and expanded the time out, and still nothing works. I am worried that my son had been downloading things off of the internet through torrents. That is why I rebooted both systems. The other computer, which is my personal home computer (never allowed the kids on it), didn't reboot this one, downloads things fine, so I don't believe it's my internet. PLEASE HELP!!!

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

HI There Sorry to hear you have a problem.
If you restored these computers back to factory settings then the problem is not with the computers as this is happening on two computers I'm thinking that the connection to the internet is the problem.
How are they connected to the internet.

My office computer is connected to a Cisco 678 Router. Qwest DSL. I plugged the other home computer to a Ative Wirless G Router, and the laptop runs off of the wireless. I have removed and reinstalled the wireless router software, and disconnected the home computer from it and hooked it back up to the Cisco with no luck. I just tried to download VLC Media Player, and got " Internet Explorer Cannot download... the operation timed out.

I feel like a dumb@$$. After reinstalling the wireless modem that I had, thinking that THAT would clear the connection suspicion, I decided to hook my laptop up in the office. it works. So it's the wireless router. thanks for your help, cause you had me think outside my scope of focus. At least it's not the computers... now I just have to figure out what's wrong with the WIFI.

Hi There
Thanks for telling me that a lot of people would not of admited that.
I thought I was correct in assuming the connection was the problem It wasn't logical what you were saying.
I could think of no other senario why this would happen.

Anyway well done and I hope you sort it out very soon.
Kinest Regards Tony B.
