Social networkings(getting started)

Hello,




I have an idea for a website, it kinda a social network, i like the idea and wanted , at least, seeing it working , to see if the idea actual "works" (or if its nothing but a useless concept). The problem is a don´t know much about how to set up this kinda sites, what do you think i should look first, any advices, any useful readings ? (i pretend to make a same look page to every user that register and give him some mb of storage, the rest is all sketches i have so far , and im telling this cus wanted to know too what do i need to have to offer storage?)
thanks, i know this must be complicated to do but if you can give me some first ideas on how to start i would be very welcome! (to have a first felling if i can do it or not) .

Well, you don't staty anything about your current skill set, so stating what you need to be reading/learning os a shot in the dark. But, I'll give you a high-level perspective.

You will need a server. Whether this is a dedicated server or a shared server will depend on many factors. How much traffic you will need, security, etc. It will have to have enough storage space to accomodate any users you would have. If the site grew large you would want a dedicated file server for this purpose.

To create the application you will need to use some sort of server-side implementation (i.e. programming) such as PHP, ASP, .NET, Python, etc. And you will need to have a database in order to manage all the data.
