Hello,
I have a Dell XPS M1710 and it wont boot. I get some green lights when i turn it on and the occaisional beep depending on the memory i have installed. I have tried just about every combination of memory that i can think of and it pretty much does the same thing with the harddrive in that it does with it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.7

Chances are your video daughter board bit the dust, but you can try this to be sure:

Hook up your M1710 to an external monitor. Upon booting, push [F2] for setup and the Fn+F8 to change the video from LCD to CRT (i.e. from your laptop LCD to an external video source). You should see the setup screen appear, but if it has a bunch of lines or crazy characters all over the place, then it's more than just a simple LCD problem. Unfortunately the daughter boards for these things (256MB and up) are quite pricey ($300+ even on eBay as of 04/2009) although if you're not getting these lines, an LCD inverter and maybe the data cable are combined less than $50 and so long as you have the right tools (the inverter requires a tiny Phillips head screwdriver, like the kind you'd use to repair eye glasses) it doesn't take very long to swap. The video board on it requires you to strip the unit down to the motherboard, though, and is a much more time-consuming fix.

Hi,

I dont know if I can post my email address so I wont. If you need to contact me, please PM me

Our company is pleased to announce we have found the fault in the Nvidia GPU's that were installed into Dell XPS, E1705, M1710, M90 & Inspiron 9300 / 9400.

We have been able to repair these GPU's with great success. We have been selling repair auctions on Ebay if anyone is interested in having their's repaired. You may search Ebay by seller. Our seller id is webepartz.

We warranty the repair for 30 days. We have been repairing these for about 4 months now and we have had a 1% failure in the first 30 days. We offer a full money back warranty for a full 30 days. We own 4 laptops that use the Nvidia 7950GXT cards that we repaired and the laptops have been running for 4 months now. We run a GPU Benchmark tests on these laptops weekly and temps remain constant with no thermal shutdowns or artifacting on the display.

Hi,
It sound to me that your LCD inverter is blown. Are you getting full resolution on external monitor? If so, it looks like the inverter is blown. Do you get a very dim display on the LCD of the laptop? Look closely. If so, for sure the inverter is blown.
Thanks

Its not the inverter, and new gfxcard will be arring this week... this is the 5th gfx card that has blown for me...

it seems its the soldering that is of too bad quality....?

Hello guys,

I have the same issue on XPS 1710. I get a flicker of a BIOS screen then nothing but works fine on external display. If I change between external display and lcd it shows up for a fraction of a second but then balck again.

Is this just a case of updating the drivers or is it an internal hardware issue?

Thanks
