Ok hang in there. The user that is logged into the XP machine, is that SAME EXACT USER administered on the 7 Machine? Probably not. So when you connect, you have to connect as a user on that local machine. So if you are attempting to gain access into the 7 machine, make certain you give the username and password of a user on the 7 machine. As the 7 machine does not know about users on the XP, and vice versa.

Make sense?

Ok, when you connect with the xp machine, are you using your xp machine credentials? If so, that is wrong. You need to provide the credentials of a user on the 7 machine. Map a drive and select "connect with other credentials" as in:

....then make certain you give the windows 7 machine name and user in the format of \\machine_7_name\user_name_you_login_with

It seems as though your scope and problem has changed. It started out as XP, and now you are asking about an 8 machine.
Version 8 has a serious network issue, visit miscrosoft and read about for your self. That is why 8.1 came out. Get the 8.1 update.

What SP of 7 are you running?
