AT&T Internet not connect??? Need help please

I just received my modem followed steps put in start up disc...all lights on except internet light is red??? I have a laptop running the ethernet cord in...do I need phone line plugged into laptop??? I ran diagnoisis test came back telling me the Authentication failed dont know what that is??? I entered same password and screen name and nothing happened??? please can somebody e-mail me advice I would greatly appreciate it thanks just need to know will this work from my laptop just to get working cuz trying to hook up my PS3 to go online?
