Operate Mac OS 10.5 on separate drive?

Hello,
I know operate on a G4 Powerbook with MAC OS 10.4.4. I
also have installed 9.2.2 which allows me to use older programs. I want to use the new LEOPARD 10.5, can I install Leopard on an external drive and use it to operate new software programs?

Configuration: Mac OS X
Safari 525.27.1
