how do i take care of my hard disk wat precautions should i take in order to prevent it from crashing or slowing down?

There is not much you can do except use a good surge protector and avoid physical shock (don't drop the computer or bang your hand on the top). If you have a problem with the quality of your electricity then I would suggest a battery backup box. That will filter the current and help avoid problems.

Frequent backups of your data to an external drive or media plus a one timebackup to DVDs of your entire drive are a good idea. Good Luck
