Hello, I'm having a little trouble with my father's laptop. I'm not sure what I did wrong. I thought it would work. I'm not too sure if you need specifications for this laptop to know what the problem is, and I'm a little too lazy to check.
Alright, here's what I did:

My laptop's battery wouldn't charge. I checked everything and yet the light wouldn't turn on and the LED was on [which is never the case if charging]. All the holes and connections were plugged in perfectly. So, I decided to help conduct the energy. I got a piece of aluminum foil and stuck it in the notebook's charging hole. I then stuck my charger in the slot. I tried to turn it on, but it wouldn't turn on. I quickly noticed a "burning rubber" type smell and pulled it out. I then waited and waited for the computer to cool down and settle itself, but it still didn't turn on. But now, when I put the power connection in the computer the light turns on well [I took out the aluminum]. I put the battery in the computer and it seems to make the light turn on as well. But the laptop won't turn itself on.

I'm not too sure if that was too confusing. I'm sorry if it is confusing. I don't know too much. Please help? I would like to know what is wrong and what I can do about it. (:

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.6

Hi There
I'm sorry you are having trouble with your laptop. This is just a bit of advise Please don't ever do what you did again with the foil you might of made the situation worse.
I think with your limited knowledge I would take this laptop to the shop pay a inspection fee and have them tell me what the problem is and if its worth repairing.
I hope for your sake that you have not exacerbated the problem by doing what you have done.
I’m sorry I could not help further.
Kindest Regards Tony B.

HI There
Sorry to hear you are having trouble but the problem is there could be all sorts of reasons why this laptop will not start up.
Is the power supply working correctly? if you know what you are doing put a DC meter on the connector that fits into your laptop and see if you are getting the correct voltage from it. "which should be printed on the power adapter".
If you are getting the correct voltage it's obviously something to do with the laptop itself. You don't say if any lights flash breifly as you press the start button if they do it could be your hard drive, memory, motherboard, graphics loose connection etc it's a long list and I'm afraid you are going to have to bite the bullit and get someone who knows how to sort this out for yoiu or at least diagnose the problem so you can have a informed decision wether to repair or go for a new or second hand laptop.
Sorry this is not more helpful.
Good Luck to you

You should probably have your mom or dad check to see if the wires arent ruined or messed up. I was having the same problem, turns out the wires inside were just fried and I had to buy a new one so sorry, but your going to have to buy a new one if thats the case. They dont cost that much mine was only $10.
Good Luck With Everything.
Jake.
