Hello,
I recently bought a USB 2 external hard drive and it works well with one exception: My computer won't boot unless I disconnect the device.

I've tried switching the boot order in BIOs with every imaginable variation (turning off USB legacy controller too) and applied a hotfix from Microsoft....both to no avail. Also tried updating my bios with no success.

Has anyone out there had a similar problem and discovered a fix?<code>Configuration: Windows XP Service Pack 3
Internet Explorer 7.0
Western Digital Elements 640 GB external hard drive
ASRock K7VM2 motherboard

Hi,
if changing the boot sequence did not fixed the problem then i will advise you to remove the external hard disk before you switch on your computer.

Thanks. I'm beginning to conclude that that is my only option. I appreciate your writing me.

Fixed by turning off USB legacy support in BIOS

Hi There
I have the same problem with a 160GB Weston Digital external USB Hard drive which did not seem to boot up with the drive connected.
One day I tried starting my PC forgeting the USB drive was connected then I was called away, I came back 15mins later to find my computer had booted into windows,

so I tried starting my computer again with the drive still connected. I left it running for quite a while and watching it, eventually after a long period it did boot into windows.
I'm not sure if it takes that long to search the USB drive to establish there is no OS on it or what???.
Perhaps when you have the time you might like to try booting with the drive connected and leave it to see if eventually it boot into you OS.

Anyway I just thought yoiu might like to know it not only your USB drive that has trouble when connected.
