2nd Drive SATA not detected

bluenite7, on Thursday May 8, 2008 12:32:57 PM
Hello,

XP on my old hard drive crashed, and for whatever reason I was not able to reinstall it (disc read error, press ctrl, alt, delete).I figured it had somehting to do with XP, so I got a new harddrive, installed XP and now I am trying to add my old harddrive back, so I can transfer my files.

New drive works great.

I went ahead and connected by old drive to 2nd SATA port on the motherboard, but for some reason it does not show up in XP. How do I fix this?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

hello

If the MBoard doesn't configure SATA controllers natively you need to install them. Look in Disk management to see if the drive shows there. If so you may need to take ownership of the files. Look below to see how.

Watch the startup screens to see if that SATA drive is showing there. If not, you may need to Enable that controller in the BIOS.

I have an IDE motherboard. I am trying to add a third drive on the secondary IDE. I have two drives on the Primary IDE. My intention is to copy the data from my Primary IDE hard drive to this new SATA Seagate hard drive and make it my boot drive. At this point, I am trying to copy the data from the primary master drive to the sata drive on the secondary ide port but the sata drive is not coming up in BIOS. I do not see any options to enable a SATA drive. I dont know if I need a driver or not. I am using an adapter to connect the sata drive to the IDE port (obviously). Any help appreciated.

I have a related problem with one of my USB Hard Drive. when I connect it to my PC using USB connection, a small icon on the task bar shows a removable hard drive is plugged but it is not showing in "My Computer". when I right click "My Computer" then "Manage" and on the hard drives installed or connected to my PC it was there. I checked on Disk Management but also missing or I cannot see it.

What's wrong with my Hard Drive? It was working very good before and only pictures, musics and movies are stored in it.

thanks,
Patrick

We have two SATA drives, plus a DVD drive. They are all showing up in the BIOS, but only the first drive and the DVD drive are appearing in Windows. What could be the cause?

Hello,
I am facing a similar problem with my USB H.D. It was working fine before but since yesterday, whats happening is that it is getting detected and shown in the task bar but none of its drives appear in My Computer. Also, it is shown in 'Manage' part of Device Manager but again, no drives.

Has some one found a solution to this problem. If anyone has any suggestions, please do let me know as I have some important data on my H.D

Feel free to email me at us_man_ch@hotmail.com
Thanks

Did the "Disk Error " not give it away?
The hard drive is most likely dead thats why your windows crashed thats why it wouldnt write to it thats why it wont detect

Try to stick to the topic. Vin, your linux issue is clearly unrelated. As for the USB devices, try another port or try it in another system. If it works, great! If it doesn't work, fork out 9.99 for a new one or wait until they are on sale for 6.99. LOL is right. The drive is probably dead or the file table is unreadable. Windows won't assign a letter if this is the case.

it all started with my nice custom build to start working a beast of a computer 4gb ddr2, quads core, sli two 512gddr3 675mhz gpus, a clear sided case with many leds, and two 250 sata hdd wich is what im having a problem with of course.
and that would be two days after installing vista premium and pwning newbs online it starts to crash giveing me angry blue screens and most of the time it would just try to only boot the cd drive i tried reinstalling vista and when it actualy let get far enough it wouldnt find any partition on the first drive so i put it on the second and it works there and when my computer posts it takes like two minutes to find the ide sata drive but it dosent find them both and if they do start working is there anything worng with haveing my os on the second drive it wont slow it down right
