You connected a audio input plug from the monitor to the earphone jack in the laptop?
If you remove the plug from the laptop does sound then come from the laptop?
Can you plug another source (radio - ipod etc) into the monitor to test the sound?
Is there a volume control knob on the monitor with an on/off switch?

I hope some of these questions help. Good Luck
