Cant re-install Toshiba backup backup disks

Hello,
i have gone into bios and changed settings to boot from cd-rom. however all i am getting is black screen with c:\>
recovery discs worked yesterday, but when i started up laptop this morning it said it couldnt find any hard drive.
i would appreciate any advice as it is doing my head in now.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.5

Hi,
if it is saying thatit could not find the hard disk, there is no problem with the recovery CD but rather with the hard disk.
type "dskchk" and press Enter.
