Hello. I recently had a virus on my laptop. End result was, I had to format and purchase a new copy of XP and install it. Consequently, I ran a full anti-virus scan a couple of nights ago with AVG. The result of this showed there were more than 200 Trojan Horses etc that had been moved into AVG's virus vault.

After deleting the files from the vault I carried on doing what I was doing as normal. I shut down my laptop in the normal way and everything seemed fine. However, when I switched on the following morning, all I got was my background wallpaper. There were no icons and not even the START button or task bar.

When I use CTRL+ALT+DEL and use the Windows Task Manager>New Task, I can access my files or the internet that way but it is very annoying. I have tried typing Explorer.exe in the new task window but it didn't work. Can anyone help me please?

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

Well symptoms wise windows explorer isnt working, if you have an xp disc put it in a click repair, its probably a missing file of some type, you could try a system restore aswell and then run a virus scan. You should also search for spybot search and destroy, its completly free and provides a great immunize function which stops pesky stuff getting in in the first place!!
