Hello,

i have a hp tx1000 and when i turn on my computer a black screen with a small white dash on the top left hand corner of the screen keeps flashing. i tried getting it to its factory settings but the f11 icon will not enable me to achieve this. i dont know what to do? i pretty much wasted £100 to get it to work for only a few days.
please can someone kindly advise on what i can do with this pile of junk!

would be much appreciated.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Opera 9.60

Thats the DOS screen, its obviously trying to load something that doesn't exist, You probably have to reinstall the O.S. you should anyway if its giving you that much trouble. Can you even get to set up options???

Yeah it could be a hardrive error but its sounds more like the computer isnt recognizing it more than its broken, is it new have you tried taking it out giving it a blow and putting it in again? Sometimes it just needs to be reinserted. You can use the screwdriver you get in a glasses repair kit to open it. I had a friend whose harddrive was messed up but i could still get into the boot up menu, try taking it out and putting it back in again, thankfully harddrives are relatively cheap anyway but you will still have to get an xp disc n matter what the outcome

My HP TX1210us laptop's graphic card died yesterday and now it's a completely useless $1300 piece of cr*p. It seems that Nvidia designed this faulty chipset and HP has been using it for a while. The ironic part is that it dies shortly after the warranty expires.

I've made a post about it on my blog, which I'll keep updated:

I had the same problem too. My tx1219us just won't boot up. It powers up, lights turn on but i just get a blank screen. I talked to a case manager at HP and he has the guts to say and i quote "I must say that there is no product that has life time support." then he added "Every entity has it's term." I'm thinking about filing a small claims against HP. who is on board?
right now I'm trying to fix it but all the steps on this blog didn't work. any other ideas?

SAME BLANK SCREEN ISSUE while the lights all blink at start-up.

5/17/09:

Since HP's customer service wasn't of any help in resolving my issue... I contacted the Better Business Bureau and is researching to file a small claims court lawsuit.

I FIRST PURCHASED MY HP TABLET ABOUT A YEAR 1/2 AGO. I HAD MAJOR OVERHEATING ISSUES. I ASKED THE REP ABOUT THIS, HE SAID IT WAS NORMAL FOR A LAPTOP TO GET HOT. THE LAPTOP WOULD GET SO HOT TO THE TOUCH AFTER BEING ON FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. I HAD A FAN, BUT THAT DIDN'T HELP AT ALL. WHEN I CALLED IN ABOUT THE HEATING ISSUE, THE REP ASKED ME "MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE YOU USE IT ON YOUR LAP". WHAT A RIDICULOUS RESPONSE! I ONLY USED IT ON MY DESK ANYWAY!!! 2-3 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING IT I ALREADY HAD A FAILED HARD DRIVE DUE TO A BAD SECTOR & FAILURE TO BOOT-UP. IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY SO THAT WAS FIXED (TEMPORARILY). I SOON FOUND THAT THE REPLACEMENT HARD DRIVE ALSO HAS A BAD SECTOR (AGAIN). HP REP TOLD ME, THEY ONLY STAND BEHIND THEIR REPLACEMENT PRODUCT BEFORE 90 DAYS!! m THAT'S RIDICULOUS WHEN THE LAPTOP ITSELF HAD A 1 YR WRNTY. THEY DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. NOW, HAVING OWN THE LAPTOP A LITTLE OVER A YEAR, IT'S NO LONGER BOOTING UP AT ALL, PRIOR TO THIS I HAD A FEW BLACK-OUT EPISODES THEN IT GOT FREQUENT. OF COURSE AT THIS POINT THE LAPTOP IS OUT OF WARRANTY. ALL THE LEDS WOULD GLOW, BUT NOW THE SCREEN IS BLANK AND DARK. AT ATTEMPTED START-UP THE HARD DRIVE LED FLASHES 5 TIMES BEFORE BLACKING OUT. AFTER RESEARCHING, THIS IS A MAJOR FLAW OF HP'S TABLET PC'S.

THE OVERHEATING TABLETS COULD BE DUE TO THE NVIDIA CHIPSET. HP REP ASKED ME TO PAY FOR THEM TO TROUBLESHOOT & REPLACEMENT PART IF NECESSARY. GOOD LOOKING TABLET, WITH MAJOR INTERNAL FLAWS. A LAPTOP'S LIFESPAN SHOULD NOT BE 1.5 YRS.

UPDATE: 6/5/09

Hey all,

I just wanted to let you know that after having my notebook sit in the corner of my room for about a month now (b/c it's useless/ won't turn on!) I got a response from HP, by contacting the Better Business Bureau to complain about the TX1000Z notebook.

I contacted the BBB about a month ago, in hopes of getting HP's attention about the issues w/ this notebook. Early this morning, I got a call from a case manager at HP (Mr. James McAarthur). He asked me to tell him what was going on, clearly he already knew b/c he had the letter I wrote to the BBB right in front of him. Right from the start, this guy sounded cold/heartless and he didn't seem to give a **bleep** if I got it fixed or not... What he basically told me was, the repair is approximately $400 and he's willing to lower the repair costs on my part by 50%, making my out of pocket cost $200. This $200 repair will also come w/ a one year warranty. I told him that was very steep still, so he gave me another option. The second option I have is paying $150 out of pocket, and I would get NO warranty.(so at this point I assume he knows there are major issues w/ the tx1000's motherboards to assume that the cost is that much, without even asking me to send it in for an 'inspection' . Or he's taking my word for it that the motherboard is an issue.)

The repair cost is outrageous, seeing that it wasn't even MY FAULT that it's broken! I paid $850 for this tablet...putting in another $200 is ridiculous. All my documents, songs, and pictures were on this notebook. Not to mention, my hard drive has the same issue I had experienced when I first purchased it. The hard drive still has a bad sector on it! This notebook has so many issues and Mr. McArthur claims that there hasn't been many complaints coming in about this notebook. (THAT MADE ME ANGRY, and I told him I don't believe him!)

I'm kind of backed into the corner here... I won't be buying an HP again, and I"m letting EVERYONE know of their poor customer service. TWITTER, FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, AIM... It's getting out there HP and your faults will be known.

About the hard drive error.
I noticed that the way the hard drive is mounted in this machine makes it very easily dislodged with a slight tap or bump. So if you are getting hard drive errors, try just re-seating the hard drive. This has worked the last 3 times that happened to my bosses HP tx1000.

My HP tx1219 has the same problems all of you are bringing up. I bought an extended warranty when I purchased it from Circuit "we're now bankrupt" City which is now covered by some company called Nexicore. Worked okay for about 20 months, then problems started. It has been sent in twice and had new system boards installed, but within a week of return it won't startup, just sits there with a black screen and LEDs glowing.

Shortly before it started up with these problems it stopped recognizing the WiFi card, then the bluetooth card, and it would never respond properly to the external controls to play a DVD. I just got it back last PM and within 3 uses it wouldn't boot up. They want me to send it in AGAIN.... so they can run "level 2 diagnostics" on it. Now I don't know *&^% about computers but shouldn't that have been done after the FIRST fix failed? Or is their plan to just keep throwing in new system boards every 3 uses until it's out of warranty?

Mine also gets so hot it burns my lap... so how can it be called a laptop? Me thinks HP puts in a few decent components to advertise well on the store labels, but plugs them into cheap second rate parts. I'd bet a week's salary the Motherboard's *&%#@!-up. Between the problems and the horrendously badly written and buggy software they dump on all their products I never want another HP product again. I have a cheap-%^& Acer at work that was 1/3 the cost and hasn't given me a problem in 4 years.

Anyway is anyone out there in cyberland a lawyer? Want to start a class action suit against these losers?

My TX 1000 started booting to blank screen (a month ago) but stats somehow after 50 tries (I mean literally!). In addition it has additional problems which I suspect could be related to crappy hardware
1. The wifi card is not detected. This started 3 months ago. But somehow it has not occurred for the past 2 weeks. I am keeping my fingers crossed
2. A few days ago my laptop started overheating problems. The screen freezes suddenly and nothing will work and the only option is to restart it. I checked the temperatures of the GPU temperature using a diagnostic software which is around 85C when idle and shoots to 120C while watching a video or running multiple applications. Also, the CPU runs at 64 (idle) and 95 (while running applications). Is this normal?? Does anyone face similar overheating problems??

I have this question too. But i have fixed up, although not throughly. I use a bag to cover laptop and keep it running. Then put it under blanket and wait 30 minutes. After cool down, try it again. I learn it from another. i really wanna to thank him/her.
If it still doesnot work, watch this:

I think it is a through solution.
Good luck!

I also just started having this issue with black screen I'm gonna try the YouTube video see if it works, as far as the wifi not being found I have tracked it back to a windows security update. When I denied the update and restarted the comp the wifi light amazingly turned blue again. When I accepted the update it went dead again. I contacted hp about the update issue and they said they would investigate that's it

I have begun having the black out screen problem too. Been so for a week now. Intermittently the laptop does boot up. If the series is a failure then why can't they extend the warranty to 2 years like they did for some DV series.

Should I contact HP?

I had the overheating problem and now blacking out. Once it shut down while I was working with it. Well I guess HP owns its fault and does something about it.

I don't even know if I want a replacement after this heartbreak for it is expensive and my first laptop and am a student on top of all this! :-|

There is a general bad opinion about HP laptops.

This is to everyone who owns a TX Series notebook with the GPU issue.

HP is not going to do a recall of this model unless we can generate negative publicity about the matter. I know this may seem somewhat futile, but i urge everyone who has issues with this model to do the following:

1. Write a letter to HP about this issue, and send some forum postings of other customers having the same issue along with the letter. Request that HP do a recall of the entire TX series. They may offer to fix your laptop, but please turn them down as request that they do a recall of the entire TX series.

2. The most important part. Send a copy of your letter to each of the major television network, asking that their investigative team take a look at this issue. Please send your letter to the major networks to stations located in the New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. I would be great if everyone sent a letter to all the major networks in all three cities.

3. This ties in to step 2. Send all letters within a 15 to 21 day period. If we can get 500 letters to one network, i am certain that this story would make the news, and shed enough negative light on HP that they may be forced to do a recall.

4. Copy this post to every Forum that you know has posts about this issue. I will take it upon myself to copy this to as many posts as i can, but it does not hurt to have duplicates.

5. PLEASE send all letters between November 1, 2009 and November 21, 2009.

Easy fix for the black screen...It is the solder connections on the GBA (grid Ball Array) they need to be reflowed. If you want to fix this yourself and not have to take laptop apart follow these steps
1- Turn on the laptop with the power cord connected
2- take 2 heavy towels and wrap the laptop in them with the laptop still running.
3-This causes the heat to build up and not be dispalced by the fans
4-Leave it running and covered for 30-40 mins
5-Unwrap laptop, turn off power and then restart
6-Thats all there is, works like a charm!!
7- I have fixed over a dozen in my shop like this

The problem is indeed with the soldering. A low-tech. solution is to 1) wrap the computer in towels and let it run, accumulating heat to melt the soldering (30 minutes) and the 2) while hot, press down on the J K L ; row of keys (hard) while it cools down. This will rejoin the loose part and the computer should work fine.

The problem will return after a while (one or two weeks)--just repeat the above steps.

FOr the wifi, you wil have to get a plug-in wireless thing and also reset the WLAN Service (under 'services') before plugging it in (every time)if you have a problem with a bluescreen +restart.

peace!
