“Most users that are having “trouble” with their magicJack® dongle are usually having connection problems with their computer's USB ports and its power supply to those ports!”

This is the least expensive and probably the best telephone service that I have EVER used!

This service ONLY costs $19.95/year and with a 5 year license extension it costs only $12.00/year! That's $1.67/month the 1st year then $1.00/month each year thereafter.

Don't believe any of the BAD PRESS you may hear about the service. I discovered what the "technical" problem was, because it actually happened to me. I was having audio and connection problems until I solved the technical problem of my computer's USB bus drawing over 500 mA, actually 580 mA, with everything plugged into the bus.

My eMachine computer, Model T2882, only has a 250 Watt power supply and that was working at its limits with all the computer cards and USB devices that I had plugged into the machine were demanding current. The attached article is how I solved the problem for less than $20.00!

magicJack® Set Up
How many USB devices are currently plugged in?
Power-Hungry USB Ports
The number of USB devices that the users can plug into the computer these days, with cameras, scanners, printers, keyboards, pointing devices, PDAs, hard disks and many more peripherals using the USB interface that often runs off the computer's power through the USB bus. This is more of a convenience since the users don't have to plug in a separate electrical cord, but it's also easy to overload the USB ports if the users plug a number of devices into many of the available ports.

Does the user's PC's USB ports supply enough electricity to power all the devices they have attached to them? Plugging too much gear into a bus-powered USB hub (one with no external power adapter) can overwhelm a USB port by demanding more than the 500 mA it can supply. Check the power demands on any USB port in Windows XP by right-clicking My Computer and choosing Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click the USB Root Hub entry, choose the Power tab, and add up the amounts in the "Power Required" column.

(Below is the advice which many users forget about.)
In a few rare instances, the USB port on the user's computer may not have enough electrical power for the magicJack® dongle to work properly.
Try using a externally AC powered USB hub to plug the magicJack® dongle into instead of using the computer's USB port if there are 'many' other USB devices connected to the computer or if the magicJack® dongle acts erratically with audio and connection problems. [e.g. Startech .COM ST4200USB 4-PORT USB 2.0 HUB (ST4200USB)»(Cost $19.14)]
magicJack® may or may not work best when plugged directly into a USB port on the computer.
Do not plug the magicJack® dongle into a multi port USB hub that is not AC powered.
Another option if you don't want to buy yet another device is to check the Power Management function of your computers USB Root Hub. Under Windows XP, disabling the Power Management for all USB Root Hubs in your system may resolve the problem. Here is how to do it:

1. Open the Device Manager (Start-> right click on "My Computer", click on "Properties" -> Hardware -> Device Manager)
2. Look under the category Universal Serial Bus controllers and find the USB Root Hub.
3. Right click and select Properties, go to the Power Management tab
4. Uncheck the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." and click "OK".

Repeat this for each of the USB Root Hubs shown in the Device Manager.

After the user has connected the magicJack® dongle for the first time, registered the device, and has the 'softphone' on the screen, the user should probably run TCP Optimizer to “tune” the computer to work with it in an efficient manner; it can be downloaded from the following website:

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

The program can aid both the novice and the advanced user in tweaking related TCP/IP parameters in the Windows Registry, making it easy to tune your system to the type of Internet connection used. The tool uses advanced algorithms, and the bandwidth delay product to find the best TCP Window for your specific connection speed. It provides for easy tuning of all related TCP/IP parameters, such as MTU, RWIN, and even advanced ones like QoS and ToS/Diffserv prioritization. The program works with all current versions of Windows, and includes additional tools, such as testing average latency over multiple hosts, and finding the largest possible packet size (MTU).

The user can use the TCP Optimizer by following these short instructions:

1. Choose the maximum Connection Speed from the slider bar (the maximum available bandwidth, in kilobits per second)
2. Choose the Network Interface, or check to Modify All Network Adapters
3. Pick "Optimal settings" from the radio-buttons near the bottom of the program
4. Click on the "Apply changes" button and reboot

If you get annoyed by the softphone pop-up dialog box constantly coming on to your monitor's screen every time the telephone system is activated, then you can try this program to curtain that feature:

I'm not having driver problems but I'm posting what works for me with Magicjack.

I got complaints on outgoing calls that my voice cut off after a minute or two. So I googled Magicjack for more info and followed the suggestion that I put it on an AC powered USB hub.

I have it plugged into a 4-hub USB strip that I got from Big Lots for eight dollars. I saw some similar ones on ebay from Hong Kong with a cord for about six dollars.

I gambled that I would only need the cord. I ordered an AC cord only from Hong Kong for about $3 and it fit my hub perfectly and now seem to get a much stronger connection.

Someone is also selling an all-metal hub for just over $20 and hucking it as a Magicjack helper.

Well, I'm doing fine with a cheaper one, but I hope to get the more expensive one too. Getting the extra power from an ac cord seems to really boost the Magicjack.

Magicjack is also really cheap voice mail even if you can't get it to work with your computer.

If you have bought it from the a authorize distributor then you'll have a technical support number that you can call, but if you have bought it from a unauthorize retailer or distributor then you can't avail our customer care service and you won't be able to avail our 6 months warranty and 6 months subsidiary warranty. If your Magicjack bugs down then we'll replace it with any cost (6 months warranty)--Hence 6 months warranty means we can still replace you magicjack for free but with shipping cost.

If your name doesn't appear on our database we can't help you--

Since Im a Magicjack User as well I have encountered that problem too. try this first---
1. turn off all existing online game.
2. disable your firewall
3. disable your virus scan

If these 3 suggestions doesn't work and your Magicjack keeps pop out messages asking for your e-mail then you'll have to to ask your dealer what e-mail and password did he/she used? Can you access it personally? After that evrything will be just fine as long as you have your authorize e-mail registered into your magicjack account.

<gras>C H E C K F O R SOFTWARE CONFLICS SUCH AS NERO</gras>; ..............
I had a the same problem with my magic jack and found that any programs such as nero cannot be loaded with the magic jack plugged in. If you did you have to delete the drive of the magic jack and go to the web site and re install the device by upgrading tool. With the Magic Jack plugged in remove the Nero program because of the conflics and re install Nero after you configure Magic Jack but this time unplug MJ before loading Nero.

I'm sorry ...
Can you explain how disabling the virus checker and firewall is a "fix". Understandable if it must be done while installing for the first time, although there are not instructions to indicate that, but UNACCEPTABLE during regular usage.

(Note: if you have formatted magicjack then proceed to upgrading by dowloading the link)
This is how will know is your Magicjack is working properly. Open my computer the look for magicjack drive E: and drive F: if both has a magicjack logo then its working properly if its not working properly you can see that there is only one magicjack drive that is visible the other one is a Removable disk (f:) consist of 18mb. If that is the case go to this link and download the upgrade program.

http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe

When Magicjack is not upgraded it will only appear one Magicjack (E:) drive and the other one will be Removable disk 18MB(F:) . It will not appear two Magicjack drives of (E:) and (f:), assuming that you have drives A,C,D,E,F or A,C,D,E,F,G,H partitions.

WARNING: all previous contact will be erase.

Right click on Removable disk (F:) 18mb or Removable disk (H:) 18mb then format. then close window after its done.

Click right click on my computer then manage. Click on disk management, rename your removable disk 18mb (f:) drive or Removable disk 18mb (H:) into Ă¢ï¿½ï¿½PHONEĂ¢ï¿½ï¿½ by right clicking properties. After that run the upgrade program you have downloaded a minute ago. Magicjack USB must be plug while upgrading.

Then your finished it will automatically restart.

I just got my MJ today and it doesn't work. When I first plugged it in it loaded the drivers then the E drive window opened and showed 3 folders but no registration form ever came up. I got a dial tone on my cordless phone but couldn't make any calls. Went to tech support where they took me through a myriad of fixes for an hour and a half but nothing works. I've done the upgrade thing but at the end it gives me a warning to plug in my MJ. ITY IS PLUGGED IN!!!! What can I do?

The magicjack device itself is a pre recorded software inside the gadget no need for disc software if you have notice working unit have a 2 removable disc drives named after magicjack all with logos of magicjack containing up to 18MB of storage this is how you will be able to see if your magicjack is working perfectly with 2 magicjack logos visible on your My Computer window. Try this 1st---

1. turn off all online games
2. disable firewall
3. disable virus scan

Since Im also a magicjack user I have encountered this problem too. Most of the time its because online games are sensitive and has protocols in dealing any existing program working thus making your magicjack rendered useless. Another one is due to the fact of your firewalls and virus scan.

Take note if your Ineternet Connection runs below the top speed of 128kpbs then your magicjack is useless ask your service provider of your internet of what plan are you paying ask if its below than 128kpbs then your magicjack wont work.

also note magicjack doesn't work on dial-ups.

Restart your magicjack everytime this happens, but when it still the same problem try hooking up another phone you had that you think it works. most of the time its the phone itself that has the problem like for example damage mouth piece or ear piece same thing happened to my client.

I had similar problems with my magicjack. I spent several hours trying to get it to just install. When I plugged it in sometimes I would get the icon and sometimes I would not. The computer would also seem to slow down a lot. I make my living making sure computers and their peripherals are running properly so I felt fairly competent. I was trying to get it to work with my XP sp3 file share/DVR server that I leave running almost all the time at home. I thought this to be the best method.

After reading some of the posts about Nero being a problem I found that annoying because I was running Nero on my machine. I thought it might just be one of the system services conflicting so I went thru and attempted to turn off all services having anything to do with Nero. No go. I noticed that the magicjack drive icon seemed to load up about 50% of the time and when it did, it was super slow and would never go thru the software install process. I tried all the fixes I could find, and uninstalled several pieces of software without a change.

Finally as a last ditch effort I broke down and uninstalled Nero and it worked. However, for some reason when I uninstalled Nero it uninstalled the CD-rom drivers for XP so I had to use the CD Driver fix here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060, in order to reintstall the drivers so that the CD driver for the magicjack would also mount. I guess Nero does something sneaky with the CD-Rom drivers when installed and it causes the fake CD-ROM on the magicjack to break. I assume this may also be the problem with some of the other burning programs. Magicjack just doesn't like the burning driver that is being used in Windows by these programs. I spent a good 6-7 hours on my day off trying to get this to work so hopefully this will help someone else. **Its the Nero don't try to get around it.**

I have not yet tried reinstalling Nero after the MagicJack install to see if I can get them both the work. I would like to see if I could get the bare Nero essentials installed and hopefully keep it from installing whatever breaks the CD-rom drivers and the Magicjack. However, with the limited amount of support I see for the Magicjack I may just have to install Nero on something else.

I bought my MJ from Wal-Mart last week and it's working just fine. When you plug it into your USB drive it'll be an online questionaire for registering. I also bought a new cordless phone which took a few hours to fully charge but once I got my dial tone I've been talking every since. You don't have to format anything just plug it in and your computer will recognize new hardware. MJ is the best thing going.

TOS - terms of service, some states allow this shared information with consent but most states do not allow, by complying to the TOS thus making it legal, anyway its just formality sake as to where they are able to send your messages. Legitimate and Business ethics don't do this sort of things--spying.

{I think I can connect the magicJack® dongle to the powered USB hub that runs directly to my router. I think I will have to first place the magicJack® dongle software on each computer on the network by first connecting the magicJack® dongle to ever computer in the network. Since my D-Link router, DIR-655, can share a printer, optical dive, or hard drive connected to its USB port if the printer, optical dive, or hard drive driver software is on every computer in the network, the computers on the network should also be able to share the magicJack® dongle. If this is correct then this is great; this means that every computer in the network could access VoIP through an inexpensive $6.00 headset/microphone device. http://webapps.easy2.com/cm2/flash/generic_outline_index.asp?page_id=35878759 }

If you get annoyed by the softphone pop-up dialog box constantly coming on to your monitor's screen every time the telephone system is activated, then you can try this program to curtain that feature:

I believe all you have to do is plug the magic jack in, and it'll reinstall everything, isn't that correct? If not, you may have to check the magic jack site for manual instructions.
