Computer shuts itself off

heikki81, on Monday 5 May 2008 à 12:06:18
Hello,

I need help. My computer is shutting itself off. It doesnt say anything, it just shuts off as if i were to press and hold down the button on the tower. it only shuts off at certain times. it will stay on for days if i only go to certain websites, but if i try to go play a game or something that requires more energy or time, i dont know, it shuts off. i cleaned the entire inside of the tower and ran virus scan after virus scan and it still does it. I am so lost and I need help.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

In your heading where you say that information is not accessible do you mean to say you do not know what the specifications are of the system you have? Even the operating system you use?

Is it a laptop or desktop system? How old?
Does it have an intel or AMD chip?
Do you know how to boot into BIOS and check system temperatures ( If the system has his function available).

If you do not know even the basics of your system then take it to a technician to diagnose your problem as any advice given here will require you to have at least a basic understanding of how a system works in order for you to resolve the issue.

hi
in my opinion as long as the computer can stay working for days so that i think it s not related to temperature
and to make sure you can try to play a movie or whatelse if it is related to temperature you should here an alarm from the motherboard and then it 'll shutdown , and then the problem is probably related to microprocessor

and also as long as it's done while playing so it maybe related to VGA and as homerclones said .. you should know or tell your PC specifications to be able to decide which part is responsible for such problems

If your CPU is running at over 60 degrees you might be at risk of burning it out. Some systems shut down automatically when the temperature reaches an unsafe level.
I open my system unit and clean the fins on the heat sink that sits under the CPU. When they collect dust it restricts the airflow and prevents proper cooling. I just did that on my system and the CPU temperature dropped by ten degrees!

My son is having a similar problem with his computer just shutting off at random. First time I took it to the computer guy, he replaced the hard drive. Brought it home, and the computer seemed to work fine until he would play a game (such as Risk), and it would shut off after a few minutes of play. It wasn't just that specific game, it seems to shut off whenever any cd or online game is played that would demand a substantial amount of memory and graphics. Took it back to computer guy and he replaced a fan, tested it, and it would stay on. Brought it home and tried it again....and it was still shutting down whenever a game was started. Called the computer guy, and he suggested at this point it is likely an external problem (network card, mouse, monitor, etc.) I took the computer and hooked it up to a completely different set-up...different monitor, keyboard, mouse, power outlet, etc., and it shut off again when I ran the Risk game and again with an online virtual world game. I took it back to computer guy again and left the Risk cd game in the drive, and told him to try it. Now here's the kicker.....the guy played several complete games without incident when the computer was at his shop. I even logged into the online virtual world game while I was there and it stayed on as well. Brought the computer home and the same problem happened....it shut off about 1 minute into the Risk game. Why would the computer work fine at the computer shop and not at home? Any ideas?

No, not necessarily.

Also, please use grammar that is somewhat.... cleaner than what you normally use. I don't know about other people, but it really kind of annoys me when it doesn't even take more than 3 seconds (and normally I just don't respond to people who can't seem to write coherently. I'm not going to waste my time trying to find out what your problem is if you can't spare some time to explain it.)

regarding your computer shutting itself off:

I've just finished resolving a similar situation, and have had others like it too, so I'm compelled to share the answers I came up with.

In the case I just resolved, my daughter's computer would begin to boot up, and then suddenly just turn itself abruptly off. it turned out that the fan (which was FULL of dust, and probably causing heating problems!) wasn't seated properly. In turn, underneath that is the heat sink, and then under that is the processor. Once I cleaned the dust out, and seated it all properly and securely, my problems were fixed.

My wife's computer had a problem like this also, except the computer was suddenly shutting itself off at random times. Sometimes during boot up, and other times it would work for hours and then shut off. After LABORIOUSLY exchanging parts, one thing at a time, and praying it wasn't the motherboard, trying figure out which piece of hardware was the cause. it turned out that the processor had simply gone bad. I was lucky enough to have another like it to try, and that solved her problems.

I also had a friend ask for help with yet another similar problem, and it turned out that one of his RAM chips was bad. I figured that out by taking both chips out, and putting just one in and seeing if things were better, then the other.

so..in summation...I'd say that twice it was related to the processor being bad or not being seated well, and once it was RAM.

Of course, also check that things are plugged in nice and tight to the motherboard as well as all the obvious things that you might plug in from the outside of your case.

I"ve spent a HUGE amount of time dealing with symptoms you described here, and I really hope something I'm sharing here will save you, or someone else who may end up reading this, from some of the time and frustration I went through to figure out my own problems. :)

my computer is doing the same thing and it's driving me crazy!

i'm running a macbook pro with bootcamp installed. it shuts off randomly when i'm in windows vista. when i boot as a mac, the thing stays on without any problems.

i haven't noticed that it's when i run a cd or a game. i'll be searching for how to fix this with firefox and boom, it turns off. or loading pictures from my digital camera - no warning, just turns off. i downloaded and installed BitDefender virus scanner to see if i had a virus. i got it to install, but i can't keep the machine on long enough to run a full system scan.

HELP PLEASE!!!

I have a MAC running XP with service pack 3 with bootcamp and I also have the same issue you do. My computer will shut down randomly and the blue screen flashes for a second but I get no error. I took my computer to apple and they installed the latest boot camp drivers and the computer stays on longer but still shuts down. I was able to send a report to windows to see what the issue is and it came back as a device driver issue; however it does not know which driver is the problem. I was able to run a full system scan with Norton antivirus and it found no viruses. I think the issue is a driver that is causing the problem. I will post any updates I may have in the future.

I have the same problem, but with the older "Quicksilver G4 PowerMAC" 889 GZ 1 GIG RAM. Shuts off usually when I'm using GARAGEBAND, so I lose all my music I haven't saved yet.

Let me know if anyone with a MAC has figured out a solution. I'm ready to toss this computer in the trash!

Thanks Ya'll,

I think the culprit is the motherboard. I have the same issue before. So i opened up my CPU and checked all the capacitors. Some have less contact, that is why if you run games or stuffs which requires more power, it shuts off. So, its better if you can let a technician look at it and replace the worn out capacitors. My old CPU works fine now after changing the capacitors. if you need more help, you can reach me @ http://xat.com/halaka

I have the same problem with my PC. Whenever i play a game that may require high amounts of energy/power such as Counter Strike: Source, My PC will suddenly shut off without warning at all. I highly doubt that this is caused by high temprature . When I went to feel the tower guess what? It felt like it was frying over 90 degreez! Here's the weird thing: When I try to turn it back on, It wouldnt just "Turn on again" I have to unplug the cord, and plug it back in...But instead, I unpluged the cord completely, and the extension cord and cleaned out all the dust that was in there and let it rest for 1 day. The next day, I plugged everything back on, and started playing a game, it didnt shut off...My suggestion is that try using my way, it might help you as well.

Hello everybody,

There is something very "random" about the word 'random'!
I am having a very similar problem with my computer.

I have a (3.5 years old) intel Pentium 4 HT (3 Ghz) on Intel 915GAG chipset with 2 GB DDR400 RAM. I have 2 Western Digital Hard Disks (80GB Raptor and a 250GB). I also have a 8600 GT Graphics Card with 512 MB Video RAM. I also have an APC 800VA UPS with a 400W PSU.

My computer just restarts abruptly (as if someone turned off the power and turned it back on!)
Upon restart, I could not trace any source of error as nothing showed up on Windows Events Viewer (I am running Vista) nor did the BIOS or Intel Desktop Utilities have any thermal/power history.

The restart issue is really random as... nothing would happen when I play games for hours or keep my PC on for days, but would suddenly turn off and turn back on without warning.

I have very new RAMs and they are I guess ok. My hard disks are new and stable too. My APC UPS has new batteries. My graphics card is less than 6 months old.

God save me!

You could try using speed fan 4.01 it speeds up your fan. and if it is a fan problem replace the fan with a better one or clean the inside of your computer. which is really hard for laptops. speed fan doesn't work with every computer.I am sure it will run on your computer. but i used the program and it fixed the problem.

From what I have read some graphic cards require more power read the description if your power supply is the correct
fit for your graphic card. Because from what have I seen companies only put standard power supply's on their computers. Hope this helps.

hey my new PC just arrived and it's having a few problems
My rig,
Case- Antec nine-hundred mid-tower
Power supply- AXP power supply ATX 630w
Processor- Athlon X2 6000+
Graphics card- EVGA 8800GTS 512
MOBO- MSI K9AGM3-F
2GB RAM space
500GB hard drive space
Vista home premium 32-bit
G15 keyboard
Creative SB Audigy 7.1 surround
54MBps D-link wireless connection

It's brand new but whenever i try playing something graphic intensive it shuts down without any warning. Just like you would pull the plug.
I've used speed fan to check my temperatures,

Speed fan says only one fan is rotating but if i look through i can see two fans rotating. But the fans in front of my computer are not. So half of my fans are running.

CPU usage is usually around 10% with a decent amount of apps running

Fan1: 3145 RPM Temp1: 27C
Fan2: 0 RPM Temp2: -128C
Fan3: 0 RPM Temp3: 30C
Fan4: 0 RPM Temp4: 35-50C

All fan speeds are 100%

What am i doing wrong. I didn't put this together myself it's straight from a company. and Only 2 days old!!

Oh and my VGA temps are a little over 70 Celsius

Banshecrys,

9/10 times a computer shuts down because ov overheating.

it could be because there isnt enough power from your socket, an incompatable piece of hardware with your mobo, farked mobo (which could be giving incorrect readings for temp etc), farked psu not powering your fans.

i would suggest taking the computer to a mates place and trying it there to isolate the socket problem.

other then that i would take it back to your "experienced" computer people and get them to swap parts until it starts working again, starting with the mobo.

btw how much did u pay for your tower alone??
