Windows XP restarts during boot

boasterb, on Monday 5 May 2008 à 10:45:44
Hello,

I am having some problems with my computer today.... whenever I start my computer it will show me a black screen with several options like : boot into safe mode, last good configuration, normal etc... the problem is that whenever i select either options it will reboot the computer so I can't get into windows at all. I want to disable the autoreboot but I can not access windows so there is no way I can do it.
I was reading about "WMIC" command but my windows cd does not appear to have that command so i can't use it :(

how can i disable auto reboot so I can at least see some error message?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

Do you have your Windows XP CD?

If so, boot up with that and choose "R" at the first menu, that will get you into the recovery console, from there, at the prompt, type in "chkdsk /r" without the quotation marks.

Let check disk run, it may take some time, but when it's finished, type in "exit" and let the system reboot. Hopefully it will fix any system files that may have gotten corrupted.

If that doesn't work, post back.

Good Luck!

well I can tell you what to do to your system but it will take so long anyway I have a solution
you should remove the Hard from the case and get a USB2.0 TO IDE CABLE and connect it to your hard then connect your hard in the electric power then connect the cable to another computer using the usb port then your hard will appear in the "MY computer" just like if it was a USB !!!
if you can't do that or having quest post back
and if you can't find a usb 2.0 to ide cable then also post back so I can give you an the inf you need to know to get it
or I'll teach you a way to fix it using the window xp sp2 cd
by the way you can always format and if you don't know how post me and if you know how but you don't want to lose any data then download or buy the partition magic 8.0 or the partition commander and then create a new partition and move all the data to it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
else\
poste back

I finally used BartPE to access NTFS volume, renamed C:\Documents And Settings, C:\Program Files and C:\Windows and installed Windows XP again. Now it works.

I have the same problem you helped "boasterb" with last May. I put the Windows XP disk in and clicked "r" at the first menu. I typed in CHKDSK. It checks the hard drive for maybe thirty seconds and says the volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked. Use /p if you want to check the volume anyway. When I type in /p it gives me a message that it does not recognize the command. p doesn't work either.

My computer keeps rebooting continually. I get as far as the windows logo, see the BSOD for a split second and then it reboots again.

Tried using the Win XP CD and tried going into the Recovery console...no use, displays a blue error screen for a split second and reboots again.

Even if I want to reformat the drive, how do I do this pl? I have the WIN XP CD with me, but if I format the drive will it wipe out the BIOS etc?

Apprecaite any help with this issue pl.

I seem to have solved the issue. The SATA Native Support was enabled in the BIOS. When I disabled it, Windows seemed to boot OK. I've read a separate article how to update the SATA driver that can enable it but will try it later...as of now happy to get my box running!

cheers...G

I started having this problem after Windows Service Pack 3 was automatically installed. I ended up reformatting the hard drive and doing a complete new installation of Windows. It then booted fine. I installed my graphics card drivers with no problems. Then I went to Windows Update. Of course, it needed to install Service Pack 3 so I let it. After a while it seemed to have completed the update and asked for permission to reboot. Now I'm getting this error again! Can't boot at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?????

The same happened here yesterday. Windows XP Home, automatic updates, BSOD happens in just 1 second after Windows XP logo at boot, then restarts automatically. I tried to set CrashControl\AutoReboot to 0 via RegeditPE/BartPE, still restarts automatically. Recovery console identifies installation in C:\WINDOWS, chkdsk does not help.

Any ideas?

I've had no luck at all. I've reformatted again and have the original XP Pro running with no updates at this point. I've looked at re-flashing my bios and have found the files and downloaded them but the instructions indicate that it can only be done from the A: drive using a boot disk. My 'puter doesn't have a floppy drive. I have one at work that I plan to bring home tomorrow and install. None of my guru friends have any idea, other than guessing that it's a bios compatibility problem.

If you find a solution please please please post it here.

I've just updated BIOS, thanks to ASUS EasyFlash utility (notebook model F2F, version 207, latest). No success, still BSOD on startup.

Also tried to make a screenshot of the error message with a DSLR camera set to 1". The camera captured the whole second, about 300ms of windows xp boot screen, then bsod screen being darker and darker from top to bottom, but the actual error message is at the bottom, not visible on LCD screen.

Only visible error is on the top: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I see a lot of people are having this problem, and no total solutions have been found...

I'm having this EXACT problem... Windows loading screen twice, then a BSOD for a split second or less, and then it restarts and repeats the process endlessly.

I'm getting the same options as most people here: Start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last successful run, or start normally.

I don't believe I still have the XP disk... But if there is anything at all to remedy this, thanks!

I HAVE TRIED ALL THE THINGS I HAVE READ ABOUT THE PC REBOOTING AUTO. I HAVE FOUND TWO PROBLEMS. # IF YOUR HDD DRIVE IS OLD REPLACE IT. # SP3 IS A PROBLEM WITH OLD HDD AND SP UP DATES. I HAD TO INSTALL SP3 ON MY XP-PRO THEN UNINSTALL IT THEN INSTALL SP 2 FIRST. AT THIS TIME MY OS SEEMS DO BE DOING OK.

I've seen this problem in the past many times and it flat out sucks. Much like most Windows errors, there is not one correct solution. Basically what has happened is one or a couple of your system32 files ( kernel.dll type ) are either corrupted, or they packed their bags and found a better computer to live in. This usually stems from a variety of malware attached to these files. These file types dictate your computer's video preferences for your desktop on startup. So when it can't recall that you had 1024x768 , 32 bit color, with the wallpaper picture of your family , it freaks out and shuts down on you. Yes a major probelm like this is generally over your desktop theme ( evil as hell right? )
In some cases, IF and I say a BIG IF, you have the correct XP cd ( edition, release, and serial #, yes all three have to match your current OS ) you can save yourself some time and money and just do a repair install of XP. It will auto replace missing or bad files, spin you into auto-safe mode, you can ditch what you don't like , and then do a real startup once you shutdown after fix. Problem solved, quit downloading porn. At least on your machine, lol.
However, in MOST cases, you have two choices. Buying a new HDD, and installing XP all over again. OR Formatting and installing XP all over again. This is because XP had so many versions, and updates, that what you have on your machine barely resembles the OS originally installed. e.g. if yu have XP sp2, you better have an XPsp2 disc. Or setup may give you one of many nasty-gram messages, all ending in wasted time. These options suck, but problems like this arise from old hardware working with new software ( I cant explain it any other way than that, it seems to be the only real link in all the cases I've seen )
BEFORE YOU FORMAT, Phone a buddy, cart your HDD over to his pad, stop and pick up a pizza and a 6'er. Or what ever else you might have to bribe him with. Cause you'll have to convince him to put your bad HDD in his good machine. Load up his machine, take a peak at your HDD thru his OS, pull out whatever you want to keep, and back up on cd/dvd/jump-drive,etc. Then give your machine the finger and format your HDD on his machine while it' still responding. Slap it back into your machine, enter setup ( BIOS ) go to advance CMOS features, set bootsequence to CD-ROM first ( if you havent already )save and exit, restart pc, load in what ever cd/OS you want in the drive, and run it like its a brand new machine.
TO AVOID THIS IN THE FUTURE - just like your car needs regular oil changes to keep the engine performing well. Your HDD needs love too. I reccomend Auslogics utility, good for defrag, junk cleanup, etc. CCleaner, for reg cleanup I usually say AVG but it works so well, it is actually a target for most malware you contract. The evil people create virus's that are set free into your system while using programs like AVG, NORTON, etc. I reccomend a freeware program called MALWAREBYTES. I have yet to see it's equal. However, you have to manually start your system scans ( it wont have active protection like the others )
I hope this was helpful, I wish I had a link to the god-fix cd you could slap into your machine and it would fix the files. But remember , Microsoft is a business, and they profit from our laziness. Keep your CD's around ( if you just have a crappy sticker on a factory machine call up microsoft and bitch, they will send you a cd) , clean up your system regularly, and back up your data ( 10g jump drives are like 30 bucks now , no excuses ) I can be e-mailed for direct questions at cwgriffith@gmail.com

It was some odd display setting. I couldn't find it through any means. I even ran knoppix and found a/the boot.ini but was not able to alter it. Repair via orig cd was the ticket.
