Follow this (If you still haven't fixed it or anyone else stumbles onto the page..)

Click Start >
Run >
Type "regedit" (with out " ")
> go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services and look for BITS and Wuauserv

When you find BITS and Wuauserv click on it and check the key ImagePath to make sure it says "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" (with out " ")

If it's something different right click the key and click "Modify" copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

If you get an Error saying "Cannot edit ImagePath: Error writing value's new contents."

Right click the folder BITS or Wuaserv (You will most likely have to do both) and select "Permissions..."

Select full control

Go back to the ImagePath key and click Modify again and paste in
"%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" (without the " ")

Check these as well

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)

Ben,

I ran across your advise today and need to know how to change the permissions for these registry keys, all of my Wuauserv files are corrupt

. I am the only person/admin on my laptop. I caught a nasty virus several weeks ago and after several scans from avast, avira, spybot, ad-ware, malwarebytes, trojan remover, ccleaner, HJT, and superantispyware i final got rid of it. However it changed all of my settings. including my autoupdate, Bits, etc... I have been able to get everything back up except the autoupdate.

I was scrolling through the registry and found under HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\wuauserv that my image path is %fystemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Obviously this is wrong and it should read %Systemroot%. However it keeps telling me that I cannot change it, access denied. I am logged in as the admin. I have tried to change it through services as well with no joy! Please help! thanks in advance.

Rudy

Hey Rudy,

Go into the registy and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services (BITS and Wuauserv)

Find BITS and Wuauserv and right click it on the left hand side, and select "Permissions". Tick full control again for allow (For each one of them).

That should fix it.

Man I wish it were that easy! I have tried that and it always tells me acces denied. This makes me think that I still have something on my PC affecting files but cannot find it for the life of me! All my scns come back clean. Any other suggestions?

If you still have this problem...
i had the same problem however after trying for about 5 minutes of setting permissions to denied before setting it to full control seemed to work. I also tried to do it quickly. I'm not sure what did it but its working now and im able to update. Good luck!

I tried to change the permissions on BITS, but although it seems to accept the changes, the permissions do not actually change, and I cannot get full access. The status bounces back to "special permissions"

Any idea how to overcome this limitation?

Thanks,
Eli

I came across your thread, and I have done what you advise, everything is as you say, but there is no control set 002, there is control set 001 and 003 though. In the current control it has the image as default REG_SZ not set. Do I change it to match the others? Thanks in advance

Brilliant! This worked for what has been a wicked problem. Thanks Ben. To others with this problem...be patient and take the time to systematically make all the changes. If it does not work you have missed a step. Go back to the top a try again. Do not assume you have made all the changes.

Agree, this solved my problem too. Have spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn't start these services.
Thanks a bunch.

I got the access denied also, but right clicking the folder (in registry) and changing the permissions did it.

Thanks for the posts. I had the same modifications done with the fystem parameter. I found I had to first remove a file with a <number>.sys in the Windows\System32\drivers. Otherwise, this file changed the registry settings back to the fystem parameter and mangled the permissions after a normal boot. It is the first time Malwarebytes failed me as even the latest version (July 5, 2009) could not find and remove it. I used super antispyware which was able to find and remove it.

Thanx a lot KW

Have been trying to fix this problem for some hours... Same here, it started through some infection - I worked my way through all online available help and got to this thread.

Best solution!!!

Fix registry as mentioned above - if encountering problems with changing the permissions in the registry enter the "windows/system32/drivers" directory and look for a suspicious sys file with a number/letter in front - dated of today. I simply took that sys file out of the folder first placing it on my desktop - deleted it later after I saw my registry permission could be set normally again...

Thanks KW for this solution!!!

I was handed a computer from a friend that barely knows how to turn it on and he tells me to help him. His computer is not working correctly. No Joke! I spent a lot of time getting muli viruses off and trojans. Finally got to the point of updating and that's when this error message came up. I spent a lot of time looking and trying different things none worked. Till I found your suggestion and BAM! It worked. Thanks a million.

Ben, you my friend are a friggin genius. worked like a charm.

Ive been to 10 different user groups & discussion forums and the MS support page...this is the first thing that has worked. Although registry modifying can be risky...I would just caution everyone to be careful with the process.

It does work though; at least so far it does.

Yes. This worked good for me.Ive never really played around with Registry permissions before..........but like lots of things, you just need the confidence. Just be sure to right-click on the BITS / wuauserv folders for the permissions, rather than trying to do it on the image path...........:)
