Alternatively, just paste it in with the links and do a find replace. Paste the link information into find, and replace with "". Replace all. Worked good for me.

Hi AKK,
Excel needs to know which workbook it needs to retrieve information from.
If the information from the source workbook doesn't change, you can copy/paste special the formula as value in the same cell.

i just create two workbooks (did not save them) In one wb I had formula =A2
i copied that cell and pasted on the other book and there too it showed up as =A2. I did not get any ref to book or sheet. Obviously I am missing some steps here. Question is which ones

Guess I interpreted the question a different way.
I thought he wanted to link the data between workbooks.
After reading his post again I think you are right.
If he wants to just copy the formula between workbooks, he needs to copy the formula from the formula bar instead of copying the cell.
After testing I noticed that saving or not saving the workbook makes the difference. When you don't save, Excel doesn't know from which workbook the formula came from, so the workbook reference is left out.

Thanks for the info Trowa about behaviour shift between saved and unsaved book. Ah the wonders of Excel and Microsoft products. Cannot live with them, cannot live without them :)
