Can't re-start computer after virus removal

Got a virus that causes pop-ups for antivirus removal "program", and also some porn sites. Friend downloaded AdAware and used that, plus Symantec antivirus programs. Worked once, then husband went online again and we got it back. (I update the Symantec program every time I turn the computer on.)
Now, after running these programs, I can't reboot the computer to save the changes. Get the message "Program not responding, end now." If I don't click "cancel", I usually have to shut off the power strip to turn off the machine, it wont even turn off if I press the power button.
It seems to have affected my email program recently as well-- I can't open my messages in Hotmail once I log in. This only happens at home, not elsewhere. I reset the Internet Explorer to original settings-- no effect.
I had to restart automatic updates from microsoft, and I now see that the anti-virus shield icon is gone from the status bar at the bottom of the screen. HELP!!
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0
You have a very nasty virus/malware going around....probably Confliker or Downandup. It has the same sign, the anti-virus pop up. It blocks Windows from updating, your anti-virus from updating and if you try to install another anti-virus it will probably fail as well. Its virtually holding you hostage. Microsoft knows of this and is issuing a tool to remove it with. However the only way I have seen to remove it is by using Trojan Remover in safe mode, worked for anyone who tried it. Its infected millions so far and is getting worse. My first encounter with it resulted in a data back up and system restore.......only to find out in the news report that its USB flash drive based and all the data we backed up is probably infected......go figure. Might want to wait til the official Microsoft update to be sure of its depth, looks real nasty. If your not part of the solution then your part of the problem. |
