Hey,

My dell inspiron 600m (almost 4 years old now) rarely starts when i simply press the power button. I have to apply direct force just above and to the right of the mouse pad during a small time period after I have pressed the power button.
I am not sure what the issue is, but I have been dealing with it for almost a year now. What could be the issue? Is it going to die soon, I plan on investing in a new laptop this summer, but I was curious if there wasn't a cheap quick remedy until the rest of the term is over while I am at school.

Thanks,

Disco

I just have the same issue. So far, what I have found is that this might be a problem with the keyboard connection to the motherboard. I'm trying to find out how to reaseat the keyboard on my Inspiron 640m. So... I'll let you know.... ;-)

I had same problem. Called Dell. They had me pull off the plastic plate that is above your keyboard and surrounds the on-off key as well as the volume adjustment buttons. It fixed the problem.

My wife has the same problem, fortunately we have a docking station that allows her to turn it on really easily. anyway, i decided that i wanted to see if i can fix her power button, volume and mute so she wouldn't have to rely on the docking station too much. i decided to buy a replacement power button board (DA0JM1YB6E6) off of eBay to see if that was the problem. unfortunately it didnt work. in the process of putting the old one back i noticed that the LED lights were never on when i press the NUM lock or the CAPS lock. thinking i broke the CAPS lock, i tested it out and still worked. so i put a little pressure on the bezel underneath the ON/OFF button. there i noticed the LED for the CAPS lock on. what i concluded the connection of the power button board to the mainboard is very loose. so tested this with powering the laptop on. with the laptop off, i put pressure underneath the on/off button and then i pressed the button. the laptop came back up. i also tested the volume control and managed to get the UP and MUTE to work, but not the DOWN volume.

right now i am trying to figure out an easy way to not have to put pressure on the bezel. hopefully i'll figure out before i get too lazy and just tell her to hold down the bezel and the ON button to turn her laptop on.

I called Dell and they told me to pry up the surface around the power button and the volume adjustment buttons. This seems to be working for me. I also read that someone seemed to be getting luck by pressing the numbers 7 and/or 8 pretty hard when the 3 lights to the left of the power button flash repeatedly. This seems to work as well. Hope this helps.

Hi,

the best and easy solution is to buy or extend the warranty of you laptop for approx £115 for 3 years and then get Dell support to fix your laptop for free.

My dell inspiron 600m has had similar problems powering up. A few months ago, when I pressed the power button, all 3 led lights came on momentarily, then the caps lock light would flash about 5 times and the entire thing turned off. Nothing ran on the computer-screen, os, etc. Looking online, I found advice to disconnect power cord and battery, wait 5 minutes, then reconnect only the power cord, start computer, and insert battery again after computer boots. This solved the problem for about 6 months ago.

Today, had same problem with powering up, but previous fix didn't work. Tried pressing 7-8 keys while lights blinked. no go. Tried prying up plastic covering around power button. no cookie. Then with everything in tact, I held the power button down longer than usual, maybe 5 or 10 seconds. I only had to do this once. Have powered computer off then on again several times and now I only have to press power button normal amount of time. I am figuring this will work for a while and I will probably have to do the same kinds of things again in a while.

Best solution for next time: Don't buy a dell.

I have the same problems, but my computer is a year out of warranty (had a 4 year warranty). First off if the computer does not start and it starts up then turns off your mother board could be going (had it replaced 3 time
Now if I hit the power button and the "G" "H" and space bar it will go on. Also sometimes I just hold down the power button for a longer period of time and it goes on. Also the LCD lights on the power board light up on there own no matter if caps, numb lock, and other one is on or off.

I got the same problem with the 6000 inspiron. I thought it was over for this pc but now it works perfectly. Here's what I did: pop-off the batt press the power button for approx 5-10 seconds (to discharge the remaining power inside) pry open the memory module (be sure you're well grounded to avoid static electricity) then remove and then replace it properly then put it back on CAREFULLY till it snaps into place. be sure that the "teeth" copper contacts of the ROM are snug-fit. then snap the batt and POWER ON. If this does not work then replace the memory ROMs with NEW ones with the exact/upgraded spec (the old ones might be defective)
