its usually in options somewhere in the game menu, so it would probably be something like options -> video> resolution. its slightly different for every game but you will find it somewhere. If you cant even open the game to get to the menu then you are just screwed, sorry. Forget about it anyway, buy Left 4 dead its based on the half life engine so you will most likely be able to play it and its the best survival horror ever!!!! :)

It's obviously just a spec problem, maybe your video card. i had the same prob with bioshock had to play it on really low settings or it would freeze.
