Hello,
I downloaded something (school recommended) and I got a virus, worm, or trojan. Not sure which because I have not figured out how to tell.
The problems I have had is:
When I first did it, my computer froze, so I restarted it. Then I noticed I had a problem because when I went to go back online I couldn't go anywhere but the home page, or it would let me go to a site where I might have to sign in, use a username and password. Then it would just redirect me back to my homepage. Like the site I was trying to go to would pop up for a second and then redirect me back tot he homepage.
I tried system restore, but it wouldn't let me use it. I did a system recovery, and instead of having a system recovery cd, mine is in my computer and is partitioned off of one of my drivers, so when I did that I guess it just infected that too.
So then I kept trying to do safemode and it would not let me do F8. SO then I jsut kept trying to get online and download spyware. It wouldn't let me so I went to a friends and downloaded a few. They ran and couldn't find it and remove it. I have tried verizon security(which was on my pc when I got it) I try spybot search and destroy, spysweeper and the maliicious spyware from microsoft.
I have a also tried 2 different copies of operating systems(because my computer did not come with one and the company never sent me one) and neither works. Even though I used one of them previously and it worked then.
Now I finally managed to get online in safe mode, but I still have the problem. Could someone please tell me what to do? I would appriciate it alot. If you need more information I will gladly tell you.
I have windows xp.
Thanks

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 8.0

Boot under safe mode , update your Antivirus software and scan. If this doesn't work then the only alternative is to make up a backup of all your necessary item and then format your PC.

I have already backed up all my files. I have them on cd. I have tried to reinstall windows, but the pc keeps telling me my version of windows is newer than the version I am trying to install. But it also says if I want to do it anyway just to shut my pc down and boot from my cd so I do it and I get as far as where I have to hit F8 to continue, then it stops me. Is there anyway to make it continue without hitting F8? I don't care what version it is as long as it reistalls. In the meantime I will try to make my anti virus work. I tried last night and it didn't want to work.
I have called around to different computer places here and explained I want windows reinstalled on my pc, and explain that I already did system recovery and it didn't work and system restore won't work at all. They keep telling me at least 150 to 200 dollars, to repeat everything I already did, then they will reinstall windows. I think that is a little strange for someone to repeat what I did and not do what I ask. So i am trying to do it myself. I can not afford to spend 150 or so for someone to repeat what I have done. Then they tell me it will take 3 or 4 hours to reinstall windows. So it would be 150 no matter what. I think they are trying to rip me off.
