Depends what version of Linux you're running. If you're running Ubuntu, download the .deb package. If it's Cent OS, you'll need the .rpm package. Otherwise, you can use the .tar file and install it yourself although that's much more in depth.

Best bet is to go onto the help wiki / forum for your distribution.

Unfortunately, using the Fedora7 package isn't the magical answer and with no information regarding what version of Linux is being used, your instructions are grossly misleading for Linux beginners. Skype Inc. does not support or maintain the various distributions of Linux very well, so there may be a bit of trial-and-error if you aren't using the /specific/ distribution and version they state on the site. I have had the best "luck" with the Static binary. Although, it does /not/ work with Fedora 11 due to compatibility issues with the new pulseaudio back-end. Skype uses ALSA as it's back end, fails to gracefully bind to pulseaudio, and subsequently sucks up 100% of your CPU time.

For those of us on Linux, we can quite readily turn to SIP for most of our PSTN connection requirements. Try Ekiga and Twinkle. You can even get a regular phone number that will follow you wherever you plug your computer into the internet by purchasing a DID to us on a sip proxy if you're really ambitious...

That won't solve the whole problem though because Skype uses a closed and proprietary protocol and you won't be able to communicate with Skype users unless you use Skype - or they get a different program - or someone creates a Skype-protocol library... you get the picture.

I say forget Skype - use something else that doesn't fly in the face of the very Open Source operating system you're using.
