Yeah this really helps out....but there is a way you can always boycot that silly display....while trying to upgrade, it will always ask whether you would like to install the windows genuine advantage and you can simply click i disagree then tell it never to remind you of the upgrade again.....bingo that solves the problem and you have all other upgrade going on fine......hope this works

Right click on your task bar, click on task manager, click process tab look for the process with the name "wgatray.exe" right click on it and click end process tree, a warning message will appear click yes, the process will be terminated.
Secondly double click on my computer, double click drive C: double click windows folder, double click system 32 folder, look for two files, "wgatray.exe". When you locate the file, right click on the file and rename them to whatever you want.
Then restart your computer. Your computer should be in good state now.

15

swastika, on Mar 16, 2009 7:27:45 pm GMT

All you need to do,is turn off automatic updates (if it is already on!)
i had the same problem and it is resolved by turning off automatic updates
how to do it:-
go to start menu>>settings>>control panel>>security center>>manage security settings for/automatic updates>>now turn off automatic updates
and if you want to avail automatic updates you have to buy the original copy of windows OS

and you must obviously follow the previously given steps to avoid the notification at first!!

Hey guys, i have a 100% solution on that, I found out about it myself but of course I have read all of other's suggestion and discovered something from it. Thank's to them I solved my problem on wga in my own way. But maybe it differs on the situation. Mine is, I have a black wallpaper and at the righ end bottom, there is the wg message. I'm using xp. What I did is, I opened up the system32 folder where wgatray.exe is located. I clicked on it and press ''Delete'' but did not confirm (didn't choose YES or NO). Then I opened task manager and clicked ''PROCESSES''. I clicked wgatray.exe then clicked ''END PROCESS'' but didn't confirm as well. Then here goes the magic. Right after I clicked ''YES'' in the END PROCESS confirmation window, I quickly clicked ''YES'' in the DELETION confirmation window and BINGO! That's it. I'm very sorry guys I'm not good at giving instructions in this way but I hope you can understand. I'm just trying to help that's why I'm sharing this to you. >hoping this would help you guys<

I am using winxp pro & I had that lame ass black Negro background :( & this trick did the job for me but you must be fast like the above or quoted post said.

1.) open system32 aka Start/Run/system32 (ENTER)
2.) locate wgatray.exe
3.) push Delete on your keyboard (but do not click yes or no)
4.) open end task (Ctrl+Alt+Del)
5.) locate wgatray.exe (press Delete)
6.) now line up the 2 windows that say "yes & no" and then lick yes to end the process & also yes to delete in this order & if are fast like a ninja from Japan you canget this issues. fixed

Work! do i have to turn off automatic updates as well? now that this has happened does it mean that I can get any of those microsoft updates anymore?

Yes, disable auto updates & do Custom only.

Turn off automatic updates.
Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates.
Use manual updates.
Start > All Programs > Windows Updates > Choose Custom.
Turn off Windows Update nag screen.
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/2667
Start > Control Panel > Security Center. On the left hand side of the page, click on > Change the way Security Center alerts me, untick Automatic Updates.

hai yem, on Mar 28, 2009 9:28:26 am GMT

Thanks for the info. I was able to remove the original pop-up message by removing the wgatray.exe a couple of weeks ago. I now get a message on the top left hand corner of all Office programs saying "This copy of Office is not genuine". This only started today. Have they put a new update through? This is so frustrating as I thought I had a genuine version. Thanks for any help

26

John, on Mar 28, 2009 10:23:47 am GMT

I always find when fixing computers, googling the message is always the best, rarely will you be the first in the world to have a problem.

This copy of Office is not genuine

hai yem, on Mar 28, 2009 7:42:38 pm GMT

Thanks John - that's exactly what I did when I first discovered the problem however I had this subsequent issue for which I couldn't find an anwer. I eventually discovered that I had some OGA files still existing and I changed the file extension for those to "old". This seemed to do the trick. Many thanks again

hai yem, on Mar 29, 2009 1:05:06 pm BST

Thanks John, I had already checked that site - the links on that site don't seem to be genuine??

31

John, on Mar 30, 2009 5:51:55 am BST

Your'e right hai yem, but you were Ok anyway. I did'nt word it to well, I was thinking how lucky you were having it coming up first on the search, assuming it did for you, using your search key word or words.

If u have privacy concerns do NOT use IE or IE8. Just get the best browsers Firefox, opera,Chrome. If uget problems with Microsof intrusiona nd bugging u up, even if u have a legal copy, stop them treating u like a dod and simply get Linux Ubuntu... it even have vesrions that work and look like Windows, get all programs for free, non match true stability and compatibility and respect as an user.

Try with this...

It worked for me.

Run this DOS command at
C:\>MsiExec.exe/uninstall {B148AB4B-C8FA-474B-B981-F2943C5B5BCD}

You will be prompted if you are sure you want to unistall. Click Yes
This will unistall the OGA notifier 1.7.0105.35.0 described on this blog.

Works for vista and XP.

You have to wait few minutes to uninstall this. Later click the End Process from Task Manager\ end the wgatray.exe.

After this, you have to restart your PC/Laptop. It should be clear and remove from your systems.

If you still see the GET GENUINE OFFICE. Restart again. (Like what i faced)

Lastly, remember to disable your Automatic Update.

Do not get yourselves confused or complicated all the above methods, there is a simple method of doing this. The method is explained below;

1) Open your file explored.

2) Close all the Office associated program running. If the not genuine tray icon is still visible just press "ctrl + Alt + del" on the keyboard to bring the task manager and click on the "Processes" tab. Search for "WgaTray", click on it and select end process below. Once it is removed, got to the next step, dont worry if it comes over again.

2) Go to location "C:\WINDOWS\system32" on your PC.

3) There are four files that you have to search for here "OGAAddin.dll", "OGACheckControl.DLL", "OGAVerify" and "WgaTray.exe".

4) Select the first file "OGAAddin.dll" and rename it to "OGAAddin.old.dll" (adding .old after the file name and before its extension) do the same to the other files renaming as "OGACheckControl.old.DLL", "OGAVerify.old"
and LAST remember this file should be renamed last "WgaTray.old.exe"

5) Restart your PC and enjoy your Office suite.

Hi:

Found this thread via Google while searching for a way to turn my desktop background black.

In other words, I WANT my desktop wallpager to be black as I believe it will use less energy. (I'll test that once I figure out how to turn it black.)

Anyone know how to do it (that is, other than run counterfeit Windows software and let Microsoft's GDI catch you)?

Appreciate any advice.

Best,
kwc

scooby, on May 6, 2009 10:27:46 pm BST

Hi. Can't find these file names anywhere!

47

drkwc, on May 5, 2009 8:08:05 pm BST

I found my answer....

Go to Control Panel/Display/Desktop... Select NONE. Then, in the color selector box in the bottom righthand corner of the box, select black.

Done.

Next I'll need to hook up my Kill-a-Watt to my laptop and toggle between this and my regular wallpaper and see if it uses less power. My guess is that it will, because black should not require the screen to produce light. And if that is the case, could increase battery life.

Best,
kwc

53

none, on May 17, 2009 9:13:32 am BST

The backlight is always on if you are displaying anything. An area of the screen is made black by sending signals to the screen in front of the backlight to cause that area of the screen to block the light from the backlight. So changing the background to black won't save any energy from the backlight. In fact, I believe I've read somewhere that it actually takes a little more energy to hold the screen in the "block light" state than to hold it in the "pass light" state, but I think the difference is so small that you are unlikely to see it with your Kill-a-Watt.

On the other hand, when your power-saver turns off the screen, it actually turns off the backlight. That *does* save energy, but it is completely different than displaying black.
