Hi,
it may be that the switch which turns on the screen is stuck or even broken.
if so, contact your reseller, from where you bought the pc.

The problem is simply that the LCD monitor is ruined, your going to have to get used to the screen on the Tv or bite the bullet and get a new monitor installed or new system all togeather.

Dears

There is just one solution at has to do with your graphic card. Go and download the most updated drive and it will solve the problem.
This is for sure for the HP Pavilion running of NVidia. The comapny has released the new driver which solves numerous bugs related to the screen issues.

I've had the same problem too with my laptop. I have the same kind and I just learned how to solve this. Since you can connect your laptop to your tv, its easier. You have to go to start and in the search box type in system restore. It may take a minute but it will show up. Once it comes up, it will show you the date that you can restore it back to. You may not want to do that date so go to where it says choose a different restore point and click next. It will then display all the other dates that you can restore your laptop to. Choose one but maybe not the most recent one. You will have to close all other windows you have open before you start it. The system restore will then well, restore your laptop and restart it when it's done. You should see the windows logo come on and you will be able to type in your password. Your screen should show.

Hello,
GUys! I FOUND THE PROBLEM! . i have a HP pavilion dv1000 windows XP I think the cause could have been many things. I solve the issue by using a different baterry charger/adpator. I have 2 exact notebooks, so i tend to switch their chargers, maybe taht was the problem, also i was in south america, where the voltage is diff 220v. I believe the charger with the problem was ruined during my trip? Who knows. But it work for me. The other sugestions here didnt work

Hi, I have an hp pavilion dv6000 and recently i have had similar problems. Most times when i turn it on the botton half of the screen is blank or fuzzy..thus making it unreadable. I actually pick up the computer by pulling on each side of the screen...just jiggling it and it always corrects the problem for me. It makes me think the problem is with the connection between the laptop and the screen.

Works for me...interested if it would work for anyone else...seems like this is a common problem.

I've been having the same problems with the black sreen issue on my pavilion dv9000. I read that if you unpluge and remove the battery then hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds. then repluge the power cord in fire it up and put the batter back in and walla fix and go to go.

I had the same problem with my pavilion dv 9000 and I coudn't fix the problem.
The only thing that I can say is not to buy HP notebook.
See below if your notebook series and product number are on the list and repair it for free.

This answer rescued my husband from a spiraling desperation over his HP DV6500 laptop's sudden inability to reboot. Screen was black and computer would not come back on. He was fearing the worst. I found this forum through a Google search in a mere 5 seconds and this particular answer in under 60 seconds. Not more than 2 minutes after that his computer was on and he was bowing down in adoration. lol. I love Google and the Internet! Thank you tradwinds for your post. It was a miracle cure!

My black screen problem disappeared when I began to open the screen to a wider angle before pushing the power button. If the angle of the screen to the keyboard is less than 90 degrees it appears to trigger the problem. By opening to wider than 90 degrees, the problem goes away. Once the screen is activated it doesn't matter what angle the screen is put at. The wide angle is only necessary at boot up. This leads me to believe that it is a hardware issue. This may be an easier and less violent solution to the problem than pick the thing up by the screen. Hope this helps someone.

Sound like the cable needs to be plugged back in properly, simple to do for someone who knows how to open up the laptop, service manual available online. or the cable may be damaged and may need replacing. cheaper to buy replacement cable on ebay than from a shop or hp themselves if u dont mind second hand parts.

Awesome! Worked perfectly, thanks Mark.

** I recommend anyone having the black screen problem attempt this solution first. It only takes a second, and could mean the difference between hours of unnecessary work. I used it on an HP Pavilion dv9000, worked like a champ. The symptoms were:

- Lights && fan comes on.
- After a few seconds, backlight is visible engaging along the bottom of the monitor, however screen remains black.
- When plugged into an external monitor via VGA, output normal BIOs/CMOS boot sequence, and was responsive.

In my case, there was a failed installed of Vista going on that errored out before booting into the OS, so there were no auditory cues. It was almost like mobo failure, but not quite. Good luck everyone!

Mark, my HP laptop problem is the same as yours: open beyond 90-degree and it goes black. I agree, must be a hardware problem.

Have you looked into this further?...found a solution/fix? My problem has slowly gotten worse to the point where its a constant issue now.

Thanks!

I had the same problem and HP just shipped me the packing box and told me it would cost $322. I have read all suggestions I could find, draining the battery, removing memory, etc. and nothing seemed to work. I was just about to call HP to reschedule the repair order when I read something someone wrote here about the angle of the lid being open more than 90 degrees and lo and behold, the monitor came on. I am now in the process of reformatting the hard drive. Not something I wanted to do but very happy I just saved myself that much money over nothing. As soon as I fix this, I'm going to go out and buy a MAC. I'm sick and tired of all the problems with the dv9000 AND Vista.

Well I've had this problem before. You can obviously use the laptop if it's connected to an external display correct? Therefor you must have hit the function key & the external display key. When you restart your laptop hit the function key and then hit that display key again and your monitor should work correctly.

Brett you would not believe how helpful your comment was. I am not totally amateur with computers but my laptop has been giving me issues since I tried connecting it to my new LCD TV. Have been getting black screens on both the TV and the laptop so I saw your comment and tried it, thankfully it worked. It's amazing the things we do when all other options have been exhausted just to find the solution being that simple lol. My guess is I've hit that button on more than one occasion while Alt+F4 out of games and windows, maybe I should pay more attention to what I'm pressing in the future. Thanks again mate awesome

-remove battery pack(if you can romove memory ram aswell) and wait 10 mins
-now start charging laptop without battery pack for 2 mins
-unplUg the power AND press and hold the power button for 45 seconds
-REPLUG THE POWER CABLE BUT DONT PUT THE BATTERY PACK YET

NOW OPEN THE LID WIDER YOU CAN PRESS POWER BUTTON YOU WILL SEE YOUR SYSTEM WILL START ONCE YOUR SYSTEM BE READY SHUT IT DOWN PUT THE BATTERY PACK BACK AND CONTUNUE TO USE YOUR LAPTOP

Good job, hasan! Kudos, man. I was almost gonna give up, but thought i'd try your directions. Well, they worked! YESSSS! So, after reading around, this is what I did, although a couple steps might be optional. Also, read hasan's directions:

1) Connect an external monitor to the monitor port of your laptop. (might be optional)
2) Shut down your system from the START menu. (might be optional)
3) Take out the battery
4) Leave power cord in for 2 minutes...then REMOVE it.
5) Press your on/off button for 45 seconds.
6) Make sure your screen is at greater than 90 degrees (might be optional)
7) Plug in
8) Press your on/off button to power laptop.

Voila! Worked for me just now!

...not sure how long it'll last, though. So, is this a tactic to make HP's repair dept extra $$? Makes you wonder! Not sure if i'll be purchasing another HP after this scare...

I reported the to the Better Bus Bureau - I've had a black screen for over a year - HP refuses to fix although they recognize the problem in several of their other laptops (if you have one on the list they'll fix yours http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=uk&docname=c01087194) not the DV9500 though? This is my first and last HP ever!

Report them please if you've had no luck with customer service - it's not fair they get away with selling comps with the same known problem over and over and not resolve when people call it in.

The Better Business Bureu says use the San Jose office btw. I called to make sure as they're are several diff addresses for HP listed in the BBB.

Good luck all!

I TOTALLY agree. I've been battling customer service over just TRYING to pay to get my problem fixed. They're so inept they can't even handle that without taking 3 weeks of sending me the same canned email responses. NOW that I know there was a recall for this EXACT problem and I haven't heard one word from them, I AM STEAMING MAD. Of course you have to go through this whole contrived process, and I see that the dv9000 is covered, oh- but not MY product number....I see how that makes sense. I have the exact problem they are describing that tons of people have, on the same product, but because my little number doesn't match I shouldn't be able to get any service. I gave their customer service an earful, but if someone doesn't get their crap together and fix it I will be calling BBB as well, and tracking down the number for someone who is actually in the U.S. instead of India so I can find out if someone with an ounce of authority is willing to do something about this. This is like problem #5 within 2 years of owning this piece of crap laptop- I don't care whether they fix it or not, I will never buy HP again.

Hello all,

I have the same problem. I am suing HP pavilion dv5t which i bought on october 2008. I can connect to the external monitor though. So the problem should be with the monitor.

I talked to the customer service through chat and they were ready to provide me free mail service to send the laptop for repair. Since i am currently residing outside USA, i could not use that service and instead contacted the only available authorized service provider in my current location (Nepal). The said they will replace my monitor but it will take a month for that as they have to file the complain to Singapore and upon investigation on my product and warranty, they will send the new monitor.

Have to wait for a month to get my laptop repaired and its not even sure that it will be repaired in a month.

I have hp dv2533xt and it has the same problem(black screen). and i pull everything apart i mean everything, such as cpu, keyboard , ram hdd ... then take the motherboard out.
1. using heat gun and heat up the GPU slowly for 2 mins
2. put it back together
3. turn it on
4. WOW it work till now. ( i have problems in april 09)
i use laptop everyday and leave it on like 24hrs . yeah amazing hey.

i found this method on youtube. type in sear at youtube hp pavillion blackscreen and it with show you how to fix it. and don't forget to put more thermal compound on cpu and GPU when u put it back together. took me 1hrs to do this. good luck to u all

Since I was able to fix my problem from this forum I though I would add one thing in case someone has the same thing going on. My dv6000 would power on but the screen would stay black. I figured the screen was out and I just let it sit there for months then today I read the forum and brought it into work to see if an external monitor would work. Nothing showed up on that either. So after reading alot of posts I reseated the ram and hard drive, put the battery back in and it was totally good. So I would just suggest reseating the ram because apperantly if it is loose it can interrupt the laptops startup process.
