Hi friends,

My laptop (HP Compaq V6212) do not boot.

It was working fine till yesterday.

When I press the power button, the LED lights on the keyboard panel, MMC Card Reader etc glows. But nothing will display on the screen or NO BEEPS. I can hear that the DVD-RW recognising sound. If I keep it On for some minutes, it RESTARTS and freeze, then again after some minutes it restarts again. BUT NO DISPLAY and NO BEEPS.

My laptop is 18 months old.

The things I tried to make it work are,

I checked the Hard Disk and DDRs on another laptop which is of same model, and my laptop's HDD and DDRs worked fine on it without any errors. From that I understood that, there's no problem with the HDD and DDRs.

Next I checked the voltage of my laptop's CMOS battery, it is 1.9V

Next tried one external monitor through my laptop's VGA port. But it did not give any display.

Checked the main battery, removed and fixed it again, connected the AC adapter...but the same thing....NO DISPLAY, NO BEEPS.

At present the things works on it are, CPU fan runs some times, LEDs on the power button and volume controls, MMC Reader etc glows. And the DVD-RW will also works (It will eject when I press the eject button)

Today, I gave it to one technician, he told me that, the CMOS battery is weak (It was shown 1.9V), he will replace it and check it again. If any of you have faced the same problem, and rectified the problem, please tell me your experience.

Thanks & Regards,

Biji Mathew

Hi,
since you have sent it to a technician, you don't have to worry.
he will diagnose your pc and will find a solution for it.
or you might have contacted the reseller where you bought the pc for more information.

Hi Biji
I too got the same problem with my V6106 sometime back.
I am not sure whether your notebook is running on AMD, But mine was on AMD Turion.
This is the common problem with Presarion AMD notebooks.
Problem: As the fan of the processor is directed in such a way, it blows all the heat over Graphics card(I hope nVidea in your case, ) so in long run there are possible chances of garphics card burn-out. Same happened with me. but the solution is very quick but expensive if you are not carring warranty.
Ask your technician to replace nVidea chip(nothing else) and its working within 15 mins.

But take a warranty on chip because same problem occured with me yesterday, I am going back for repair it but no worries I hold the warranty this time.

Hope this might help you.

There is a company who can carry out the rework on the graphics chip for £75+VAT and if they cant fix the problem they wont charge you. I have provided the link below:

I am a technician and have come across this problem on HP and some Compaq models especially those model nos. V------
A technician friend of mine had about 5 similar models with exactly the same problem. The problem is with the graphics card on the mother board. To fix the problem properly means changing the motherboard and that is not cheap.

So best thing is to get another brand type. AVOID THOSE HP / COMPAQ V series type of laptops.

Hello,
Saw the scrap regarding the laptop servicing.

Where you are from? Can you repair the motherboard? I mean change to graphic chip to a new graphic chip?

How much it will cost. Do reply.

Thanks

Thanks for you reply FUNNYMAN,

I tried the steps given by HP Online Technician, but did not worked.

Today had a chat with another HP online Technician, and he/she mentioned that, the problem may with the Graphic Card.

Is it possible to change the graphic card? How much it will cost?

If I change the entire motherboard, how much it will cost?

Please reply.

Hi Adithya,

I tried all the steps suggested by the HP Online Technician. But it did not work. Yesterday I opened the laptop ( I took the photographs and also video, which I will upload in my orkut ID "BIJI MATHEW A" . You can see all the photos and videos from my orkut ID. You can find me by searching my name "BIJI MATHEW A + KOTTAYAM" in www.orkut.com. ) I saw the NVIDIA chip on the motherboard which is said to be damaged. I don;t know who can do a chip level service to replace that graphic chip and made it work. If I give it to a HP Service place, I don't know how much they will charge me. From some of my friends I came to know that, they will charge heavily.

Here I am copying the last chat I did with HP Online Technician.

BIJI MATHEW : Continuation of chat I had with CINDY activity ID of Chat : 1209387

BIJI MATHEW : Hello Malia....

BIJI MATHEW : I had a chat with CINDY last night ( Indian Time ) regarding the problem of my laptop HP Compaq Presario V6212AU.
Malia : Alright. Sure, let me check your previous chat session.
Malia : May I have 2-3 minutes of your time while I check the previous chat session?
BIJI MATHEW : Sure.. Thank you.

Malia : Thank you for the serial and the product number.
BIJI MATHEW : You are Welcome. Hope you can help me in fixing the problem of my laptop.
Malia : I regret for the Inconvinience caused to you.
BIJI MATHEW : Its not only an inconvenience... :) When my friends are using the other brands of laptops like DELL, LENOVA, TOSHIBA, ACER etc. the great HP (my thoughts) went wrong. Do you have any solution to rectify this problem?
Malia : Thank you for your time and patience.
Malia : I apologise for the Inconvinience caused to you.
Malia : From the Previous chat session I understand the you had performed all the possible Troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue, and the issue still persists in this case I suspect that it might be the issue with the LCD screen of the Notebook which needs an onsite Diagnosis.
BIJI MATHEW : If thats the problem with LCD screen, why there's no BEEP sound while booting?
BIJI MATHEW : Even I tried connecting a VGA monitor on its VGA port. If the LCD have problem, it should work with the VGA port right?
Malia : I apologize for the delay in response.
Malia : Yes, Biji you are correct it should work while you connect to the External Monitor.
Malia : As this is an Hardware issue which needs a On site Diagnosis to identify the Exact issue.
BIJI MATHEW : You can say all the apology/regret/thanks at the end of this chat session.... :) Think good or ask any of your friend regarding this problem and please get me a solution to fix this problem, or let me know which part may have problem and why it happened. I mean why it happened, since I used to keep it very clean and not allowed anyboody else to work with it. Also it was loaded with Genuine Windows Vista Home Edition, and I used to update it regularly.
Malia : Could you please let me confirm where did you purchased the Notebook?
BIJI MATHEW : I purchased this product from a shop named ONLINE IT SHOPPE, Near Nagampadom Over Bridge, Kottayam, Kerala State, India.
Malia : Thank you for the information.
Malia : Biji, the issue is with the display card or the connectors of the same with the motherboard. SO to isolate and rectify that issue, it is not possible to rectify it through this chat service as it requires onsite diagnosis.
Malia : I request you to contact HP Local support at your place to get it repaired.
Malia : Since other LED's on the notebook are glowing we can isolate that the issue is with the display card, but to isolate whether it is the connector or the card itself, only a service personnal can tell that after dissembling the notebook.
Malia : Please go through the Below weblink to contact HP service centres in India;
Malia : http://welcome.hp.com/country/in/en/contact/phone_assist.html#section1
Malia : Note: Please do not click the link, just copy the entire link and paste it in a new Internet Explorer browser window and hit Go.
BIJI MATHEW : Okay Thank you for your information. But did not notice in my previous chat that, when I used to keep the laptop ON, every 25 seconds, it restarts and after a couple of hours it MAY boot properly. I got it booted a couple of times, but from 2 days, it did not boot... only restarts every 25 seconds. About the local HP service centres here, I am afraid that they will bill me more for the service telling that, "this/that was replaced". May be they say the motherboard itself has to be changed and that would be very costly. The HP authorised service point near to my place is REDINGTON, Cochin. Very expensive service centre. Through my friends I heard that, they will charge even for not the changed items.
BIJI MATHEW : Correction : Okay Thank you for your information. But did you* notice
Malia : I can understand your concern Biji.
Malia : Biji, I had gone through the Previous chat session and came to know that it might be the issue with the LCD, or with the Internal Hardware malfunction of the Notebook.
BIJI MATHEW : Okay thank you for your suggestions. I think you cannot give me any other suggestion except giving the thing to a Service Centre. Have a nice day. Bye.
Malia : I can understand your concern.
Malia : Is there anything else I may assist you with?
BIJI MATHEW : Nothing Else... You may leave now.

Hi All,

As per the HP online technician's suggestion, I contacted HP authorised service centre in Ernakulam ( Kerala ). When I described the problem of my laptop, the service technician told me that, problem is with the NVIDIA graphic chip and it has to be replaced.

I asked him the cost of changing the chip and time takes to repair it. He replied, it will cost around Rs.8500/- (INR). Since they are giving the laptop to their Culcutta service centre it takes maximum of 2 weeks to get it repaired.

I asked him the cost of motherboard, he replied it costs around Rs.16000/- (INR)

Since I am in short of money, I did not give it for repair yet. :)
If you are ready with this much amount, you can contact them.

Hi Abijimathew,

As I have previously described the problem(solution as well).

You got to replace the nVidia chip, that's correct, but I don't believe in price they have asked.
I had the same problem with my V6106. I got nVIDIA chip replaced with 2500(INR) @ Nehru Place, New Delhi in front of my eyes, and about the time as I said "in front of my eyes"(in 30 mins I got it back).

One more thing, If your notebook is not 3 Yrs old HP will do it free of cost.
If you have doubt that you got just 1 yr warranty, thn I tell you its for notebook, but few parts like Mother board, its for three yrs.
Also, as HP doesn't do component level repairing, they just replace whole motherboard for NVIDIA and even thats for free.

You might have contacted non-authorised Service center or He is cheating you.

Hi Ankit,

Thanks for your reply.
About contacting the HP authorised service centre and claiming for a free of cost repair is for no use. They won't service it for free of cost. While purchasing we are getting only 1 year warranty and we won't get any free service . Like you said, giving a complaint to consumer court will be better, but I don't think that will help. If you believe that, you can get a free service or new laptop, if you give a complaint in consumer court, I will also support you regarding this matter.

If you give it for service in any HP authorised service centre, they will charge you heavy, because they are living for cheating people like us.

If you give it for service in any other service centre (those who do chip level service) you can get it serviced for less than Rs.3500/-

I did not repaired my laptop yet, I will do it soon, and planning to sell it off...... because I don't have any other option. But I am sure, if you decide to go complain in consumer court, I am also with you.

Biji Mathew

I bought a new motherboard on ebay and downloaded the manual for my laptop - i replaced the motherboard and reassembled my laptop. It cost $100 for the motherboard and maybe 2 hours of time (you have to be very careful taking the laptop apart, many little ribbon cables that can tear if you do not disconnect first). So, that is the best solution. Or take it to someone who will do it for you, but they will charge around $300 for it.

HP Pavilion with AMD Turion and NVDIA Graphics simply sucks.
I have one HP Pavilion 6000DVnr with Turion (64*2) TL-50 and NVDIA GFORCE 6050 I guess. Everyhing looks fine apart from it doesn't boot ! I bought it from bestbuy and when returned to India it started giving the same problem only after 14 months ( Yes you are right as my warranty was for 12 months). Overheating of the laptop is a perpetual problem with this confuguration. One of mine friend was previously working in NVDIA Bangalore and he admitted the same problem. Infact nowadays AMD & NVDIA don't have any business tie up also.

Dont know what do with this shit (apart from throwing it to trash and buying a new one).

I took it to HP service centre in Kolkata (Where I am from). They simply said ( after they knew the warranty is over) and more irritating while telling and smiling that the motherboard has a problem and it has to be replaced for a cost of 20000 INR !

I tried with a local laptop technician . He took it and checked for a month and changed something (which he didn't tell me) and charged me 5500 INR. I though OK. Now after using it for only three weeks its the same problem. Again the same story and weird explanations by the technician. Returned me (this time free of cost). Used it for another month, and huh... U guesses it right.. Same old problem..no booting only glowing of blue lights, self restarting, and blah blah blah...

Does anyone in this forum know from where I can change the NVDIA Chipset ( I am sure the problem with the Graphics chip) in Kolkata with a some sort of guarantee on that NVDIA chip maybe in KOLKATA??

Thanks for the patience

Hi Friends,

Instead of repairing this HP6212 laptop frequently, repair it by an experienced chip level technician and return it to the company from where you brought it and exchange it with any other good brand laptop. You may need to pay some extra money for the new laptop. I am planning to do like that after repairing my laptop.

I really don't know how to file a case against HP regarding the laptop issue.

Biji

I can help you only if you are in Delhi or you can send your laptop to Delhi. Actually, all the technicians only give some heat to the VGA chip and return it back to the owner. If it starts working they charge for it if not they dont charge. But this thing does not last long and also damages the chip and its bond completely leaving it beyond repair. This work requires special machines to do which are costly and are not every technician can afford it. I know a person who is expert and also gives 25 days warranty. Takes around 1 week to repair and fully check the laptop. Costs around Rs. 3500/-. Contact me at 9811049801

Hi there,

I work in a small computer store and have had many experiences with problem on customer's laptops. I do not know if you are aware of this or not but Hp has extended warranty on certain HP and Compaq models to 24 months.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/...

The above link will take you to their Canadian support page that I have dealt with, but they should have a similar page for other countries. On this page you input your model and serial number to determine if your model is covered. Call their tech support and ask about this warranty specifically because their tech support do not always know of this, (or do not offer it if they do) when calling.

In my case they send out a box through a courier service with a return way bill, turn around time is around 1-2 weeks and they replace the motherboard free of charge saving our customers hundreds of dollars

I hope this helps,
Scott
