Pictures do not appear in word 03

everytime i try to open a document containing a picture in Normal, Print or Web layout view, all I get is the frame; when I open the document in Reading Pane, the picture appears.
what shall i do to make it appear?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0
