Windows Update broke my DVD ROM

I recently had a problem with my DVD ROM refusing to read any discs. After trying several things, I performed a repair install of Windows, which fixed the problem. After Windows updated itself, the problem returned. Specifically, it was after Windows installed Service Pack 3. The next set of updates after that actually seemed to fix the problem, but the final set of updates caused the problem again. Can anybody help with this?

If u no what updates broke it go on
add/remove programmes and uninstal them as its more important to have a working dvd rom that update!

Unfortunately, the last thing to break it was a set of security updates. I don't know how to remove those, and even if I did, I wouldn't know which ones were which. I will try removing Service Pack 3 though. Thanks for the advice.
