Try this:

This thing also happened to me! My messenger's fonts became bold while normal fonts became italicized. It's driving me crazy!

What I did was,
-Right click
-Personalization
-Windows Color and Appearance
-"Open classic appearance properties for more color options"
-I changed my font to Windows Vista Basics, then back to Windows Aero.
It changed my desktop font back to normal.

I had a similar occurrence on Windows 7. It changed everything including instant messenger etc. What I did was go to Control panel-Appearance and personlization- Display. Then there was something called "Adjust ClearType text". I did this, it will ask you to choose which sets of text look better to you (calibration), then when it was done it fixed everything back to normal.
