Make sure your xp system has the right driver, run the network wizzard after you update the driver. If you are on a hardline net work or wireless through a gateway or router. hard to tell exactly from what info you gave, xp vs. vista issue. Diffrent drivers but IP Protocols are a standard so if it pings it would have to be in the software or driver on the xp system.

What kind of network are you on/ VPN, Terminal Server at your work place, wireless or wired router at home or work, the network doesn't sound like the problem it sounds like the xp system doesn't know how to tell the printer what it needs to know to print (said) document. So the driver for the printer on the xp system is a suspect issue and if the driver is designed for xp or vista. Most likely not interchangeable.
